29  This year, SITT is organizing the 3rd Annual National Water Rocket Competition during World Space Week, 2012 in 11 cities all over Pakistan o Karachi o Hyderabad o Lahore o Islamabad o Faisalabad o Bahawalpur o Multan o Quetta o Peshawar o Gilgit o Abbottabad 15 NATIONAL WATER ROCKET COMPETITION, 2012

30  Basic Parts of a Water Rocket  Principle of Rocket Flight  Construction of a Water Rocket (video) WATER ROCKET 30

31 BASIC PARTS OF A WATER ROCKET a) Nose cone  Contains Ballast and Cushioning Ballast provides aerodynamic stability during flight Cushioning preserves shape of rocket on impact b) Body  Holds water and compressed air c) Skirt  Used for attaching fins to body d) Fins  Ensure accurate flight in desired direction e) Nozzle  Releases compressed air and water from body at high velocity 17

32 PRINCIPLE OF ROCKET FLIGHT  Newton’s famous Third Law of Motion:  FOR EVERY ACTION, THERE IS AN EQUAL AND OPPOSITE REACTION  In Water Rockets:  Action: Release of compressed air and water from body of rocket through nozzle  Reaction: Rocket propelled forward at high velocity due to thrust thus produced 18
