1 Spill-free Vehicle Refilling for the Clean, Safe and Efficient Introduction of AdBlue IDENTIC AB © IDENTIC AB 2004

2 What is AdBlue and why is it needed n AdBlue is a high-purity aqueous Urea solution containing a 32.5% solution of Urea in water. The quality of AdBlue is important and is defined in a DIN standard, DIN n New legislation regarding exhaust emission limits have been set by the European Union. These new emission limits come into force in 2005 (EURO 4) and in 2008 (EURO 5). The limits are set out in several European Union Directives, including 88/77/EEC, 1999/96/EC and 2001/27/EC. n Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and AdBlue has been selected by the European Vehicle Manufactures as the solution to reduce the emissions from Diesel engines. n SCR systems will be used on diesel powered heavy-duty vehicles over 3.5 tons to reduce the nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx). AdBlue usage amounts to approximately 3-4% of the fuel consumption on EURO 4 vehicles. A typical heavy-duty vehicle will consume approximately 3 tons of AdBlue each year.

3 How does SCR technology work SCR is an after-treatment system which deals with emissions in the exhaust system. AdBlue is mixed with air and injected directly into a catalytic converter inside the exhaust system. A chemical reaction takes place which converts the NOx present in the exhaust into a harmless gas and water. AdBlue tank Exhaust gases from the engine Dosing & control system Catalytic converters Clean exhaust Compressed air Typical SCR system on vehicle (Example from BOSCH)

4 Projected Requirement for AdBlue in Europe The requirement for AdBlue will increase steadily over the coming years. It is estimated that by 2010 the yearly demand for AdBlue will exceed 4 million tons per year and around 20,000 filling locations will exist in Europe.

5 Careful Handling is Required Although AdBlue is considered non-hazardous it presents several challenges when it comes to storing and handling the chemical on a daily basis. AdBlue has the following specific properties These properties require that AdBlue is handled with care. Any equipment that comes in contact with AdBlue must be made of suitable materials to prevent corrosion and contamination. Dispensing systems must minimise contact with air to prevent crystallisation, provide protection from cold weather and prevent spillage. Conventional dispensing equipment is not suitable for handling AdBlue. n It quickly crystallises when exposed to air n It freezes at -11 o C n It has a corrosive effect on some common metals n It should be protected for contamination n It should not be released freely into the environment

6 AdBlue Requires a Sealed Connection n It prevents the risk of spillage reducing the risk of crystallisation and corrosion on the vehicle and at the filling point n It ensures only AdBlue can be filled in the vehicles AdBlue tank preventing the risk of incorrect filling which could permanently damage the vehicles SCR equipment or create a hazard n It protects the quality of AdBlue preventing the risk of contamination, ensuring the vehicle reaches the emission standards it was designed to achieve. Unique interface not interchangeable Conventional Diesel Nozzle Spill-free AdBlue nozzle To ensure AdBlue can be handled in a reliable and safe way, IDENTIC has developed a sealed dispensing system for refilling AdBlue on vehicles. This spill-free vehicle refilling system provides the following advantages

7 Spill-free Vehicle Refilling (SVR) for AdBlue

8 AdBlue SVR Nozzle and Tank Inlet Adaptor Key Benefits n Only AdBlue can be filled in AdBlue tank n No spillage n No crystallisation n Protects SCR-system from contamination n Automatically filling to correct level IDENTIC has designed a spill-free nozzle specifically for use with AdBlue. The SVR Nozzle provides a sealed connection between the dispenser and the vehicles AdBlue tank.

9 AdBlue SVR Tank Inlet Adaptor n Can be installed by the vehicle manufacturer or tank supplier n May be retrofitted by the vehicle operator n Adaptable for all types of vehicle tanks n Allows the tank inlet to be positioned at all angles n Built-in pressure and expansion control Key Benefits A tank inlet adaptor is fitted inside the neck of the vehicles AdBlue tank. This allows the SVR Nozzle to be connected and ensures only AdBlue can be filled in the tank.

10 Designs for Tank Inlet Adaptors A range of tank inlet adaptors are being produced to suit different AdBlue tank designs

11 Spill-free Vehicle Refilling System for AdBlue Vehicle AdBlue Tank Dispenser Wireless Communication Key Benefits n Unique interface n Spill-free refilling n Automatic or manual filling volume n Prevents contamination n Option; detecting AdBlue quality n Option; data collection and communication Vehicle Control Module and tank level sensor Pump Control Module

12 Refilling Using the SVR Nozzle for AdBlue

13 AdBlue SVR Nozzle in Use Refilling Sequence – Connection (Step 1 of 3) The operator connects the Nozzle to the vehicles AdBlue tank. Vehicle Control Module (VCM) including Level Sensor [Future Option for including Quality and Temperature Sensor]

14 AdBlue SVR Nozzle in Use Refilling Sequence – Filling (Step 2 of 3) Pumping begins and the tank is filled to the correct level. The operator is free to stop the filling as any time or wait for the pump to stop automatically. The VCM signals the pump when to start and stop

15 AdBlue SVR Nozzle in Use Refilling Sequence – Disconnection (Step 3 of 3) Filling is complete. The Nozzle is released and returned to the holster with no spillage. Release button.

16 Storage and Dispensing Systems for AdBlue

17 Modular Storage & Dispensing Systems - IBC to 30m3 IDENTIC will make AdBlue available in a range of storage systems, ranging from 1,000 litre IBC containers to 30,000 litre tanks. This range of storage and dispensing systems is designed to suit installations of all sizes. Each system will include the IDENTIC SVR AdBlue Nozzle.

18 Modular Systems for AdBlue in IBC tanks Key Benefits n Easy to transport - pre-fabricated design n Easy to install - “Plug-and-Play” n Low maintenance costs Example of Compact Module with storage for 1000 litre IBC container

19 Modular Systems from 1 to 15m 3 Key Benefits n Same concept – from 1 to 15 m 3 – economies of scale Easy to transport – pre-fabricated design Easy to install – “Plug-and-Play” n Low maintenance costs

20 Modular Systems from 1 to 15m 3 Key Benefits n Same concept – from 1 to 15 m 3 – economies of scale Easy to transport – pre-fabricated design Easy to install – “Plug-and-Play” n Low maintenance costs Modular design allows installation to expand when needed
