5 Continuing Competence Requirements for License Renewal and Reinstatement n Law and Rules apply to ALL NC nurses – RN, LPN, and APRN

6 A Reflective Practice Approach for Continuing Competence n Individual responsibility n Routine periodic self assessment n Identify strengths and opportunities for continued growth n Implement personal learning plan

7 Continuing Competence “... t he ongoing acquisition and application of knowledge and the decision-making, psychomotor, and interpersonal skills expected of the licensed nurse resulting in nursing care that contributes to the health and welfare of clients served”

8 Reflective Practice “... is a process of assessing one’s own nursing practice to identify and seek learning opportunities to promote continuing competence”

9 A B C D  Assess personal practice  Based on standards  Collect feedback  Develop and implement a learning plan and select learning activity for demonstration of continuing competence

10 A --- Self Assessment n Assess the following four dimensions of practice: 1) Professional responsibility 2) Knowledge based practice 3) Legal/ethical practice 4) Collaborating with others n Dimension Worksheets are available on BON website – OR you may choose to use your own forms

11 B ---Based on applicable standards n Think of the standards that apply to your practice– n Nursing law and rules (apply to everyone) n Employer policies n Accreditation Standards n Certification Standards n Specialty organizational standards

12 Example of Self-Assessment I use evidence, such as research find- ings and current clinical expertise, to base decisions relevant to my practice. 21 NCAC (a)&(b) and.0225(a)&(b) X 2.4 from Knowledge based practice

13 C --- Collect Feedback n Collect feedback about your practice from others n This could include people having knowledge of your practice, such as your supervisor, peers or other colleagues, individuals you may supervise, patients or patient family members, nursing students, etc.

15 D --- Develop a Learning Plan n Based on your assessment, identify strengths and areas to develop in your practice n Next, identify one or more goals for improving your practice n Then, choose a learning activity from the 8 Board approved options  Learning Plan Template is available on website – OR you may use your own format

16 Implementation n At the time of license renewal or reinstatement, ALL licensees are required to complete the process of self assessment, develop a learning plan, select an approved learning activity, and implement their plan!!

17 Acceptable Learning Activities 1) National certification 2) 30 hrs of CE 3) Refresher Course 4) Academic education 5) 15 hrs of CE + project 6) 15 hrs of CE + publication 7) 15 hrs of CE + presentation 8) 15 hrs of CE hrs active practice Choose ONE of these options

18 Option 1 n National Certification or re- certification related to the nurse’s practice role by a national credentialing body recognized by the Board

19 Option 2 n Thirty (30) contact hours of continuing education activities related to the nurse’s practice n Note: one contact hour= 60 minutes

20 Option 3 n Completion of a Board approved refresher course

21 Option 4 n Completion of a minimum of two (2) semester hours of post-licensure academic education related to nursing practice

22 Option 5 n Fifteen (15) contact hours of continuing education and completion of a nursing project as principal or co-principal investigator

23 Option 6 n Fifteen (15) contact hours of continuing education and authoring or co-authoring a published nursing- related article, paper, book or book chapter

24 Option 7 n Fifteen (15) contact hours of continuing education and designing, developing, and conducting a professional presentation or presentations totaling 5 contact hrs

25 Option 8 n Fifteen (15) contact hours of continuing education and 640 hours of active practice within the previous two years

26 Prorated CE Hours

27 Recognized CE providers n Any provider recognized by a national credentialing body that offers certification in nurse’s specialty area of practice n Any provider recognized by a national credentialing body offering certification to advanced practice nurses

28 Recognized CE providers n NCNA or any other state nurses association n ANA n NLN n NFLPN n NAPNES n NC AHEC n NC BON or any other state board of nursing n NCSBN n Employer sponsored ( up to 50% of requisite hours) n Other professional CE for health professionals

29 Unacceptable CE n Offerings for lay persons n Offering less than 30 minutes n On-the-job orientation n On-the-job training related to policies, procedures or equipment n Other non professional educational activities

30 Accountability n At the time of license renewal or reinstatement, ALL licensees are required to attest to having complied with the requirement for Continuing Competence n Licensees are randomly selected for audit and are asked to submit evidence of completion of one of the approved learning activities

31 Accountability n Effective July 1, 2011 n Licenses not issued until requirement met n Renewal – Inactive Status n Reinstatement – not issued

32 Accountability When Audited n Complete all requirements n Submit evidence of requirements by the 20 th of the renewal month n Correct address n Individual responsibility

33 Privacy of Documents n If audited, nurses submit documentation validating completion of selected learning activity n Self-assessment and learning plan are personal documents
