3 What’s the difference? Between a phrase and a clause? A phrase is a group of related words that is used as a single part of speech and that does not contain BOTH a verb and a subject. It can’t stand alone. A clause is a word group that contains a verb and its subject and that is used as a sentence or part of a sentence

Coordinating Conjunctions connect two INDEPENDENT CLAUSES. Meaning: these two sentences could stand alone, but it’s just better if we put them together… BUT! Since they are independent and don’t like to be part of a pair, we need a FANBOYS and a comma to keep the peace! , Complete Sentence FANBOY Complete Sentence For And Nor But Or Yet So Ex. Sally loves One Direction, but she also loves Ne-yo.

Subordinating Conjunction: Subordinating conjunctions add detail to a sentence by connecting a DEPENDENT clause to an INDEPENDENT clause. Rule #1: When a subordinating conjunction adds detail to the BEGINNING of a sentence as an “INTRODUCER”, you must use a comma to separate the dependent clause from the independent clause. Subordinating Conjunction , Dependent Clause Independent Clause As, After, Although, While, When, Until, Before, Because, If, Since Ex: Although the movie ran late, I still made it home by curfew.
