2 2 OPTIMOD-AM 9400 Until now, if you wanted an AM audio processor that provided no-compromise, independent, multiband processing for analog AM and digital radio (like iBiquity’s HD-AM™ system), you had to buy two boxes.

3 3 OPTIMOD-AM 9400 Orban’s OPTIMOD-AM 9400 changes all that by offering two independently adjustable processing chains: One for the analog channel and one for the digital channel.

4 4 OPTIMOD-AM 9400 The only processing common to the two channels is the AGC and stereo enhancer. Beyond this front-end processing, you get two of everything: equalizer, five-band compressor/limiter and peak limiter, each optimized for its intended transmission channel.

5 5 OPTIMOD-AM 9400 For example, the analog-chain peak limiter uses Orban’s exclusive multiband distortion-canceled clipper and overshoot compensator, while the digital chain uses an advanced, low-IM look- ahead limiter to make the most of low bit-rate codecs. Moreover, both processing chains are stereo. The analog chain is fully compatible with Motorola’s C-QUAM ® AM stereo system. This is truly one AM processor that does it all.

6 6 OPTIMOD-AM 9400 We realized early on in the 9400’s design process that AM stations need more than just AGC and peak limiting on their digital channels. Particularly because of the preponderance of talk on AM, these stations also need Orban- quality five-band compression and limiting to ensure spectral consistency and smooth source-to-source continuity on the digital channel.

7 7 OPTIMOD-AM 9400 However, the analog and digital five-band compressor/limiters require very different thresholds and time constants. Appropriate equalization settings and peak limiting technologies are very different as well. That’s why the 9400 is essentially two processors in one.

8 8 OPTIMOD-AM 9400 The digital processing channel includes Orban’s latest low-IM look-ahead peak limiter, which doesn’t add clipping distortion that the channel’s codec would otherwise waste precious bits trying to encode. This channel also features Orban’s PreCode™ technology, which manipulates several aspects of the audio to minimize artifacts caused by low bit-rate codecs and to ensure consistent loudness and texture from one source to the next.

9 9 OPTIMOD-AM 9400 PreCode™ includes special audio band detection algorithms that are energy and spectrum aware. This can improve codec performance on some codecs by reducing audio processing-induced codec artifacts, even with program material that has been preprocessed by other processing than OPTIMOD.

10 10 OPTIMOD-AM 9400 The 9400’s analog AM processing chain borrows technology from Orban’s Optimod-FM 8500, including an “intelligent” clipping distortion controller and automatic speech detection. You can tune the processing separately for speech and non-speech material. The 9400’s audio clippers and overshoot compensator are anti-aliased and operate at 256 kHz sample-rate.

11 11 OPTIMOD-AM 9400 The 9400’s analog processing chain features Orban’s patented third-order shelving receiver equalizer with parametric curve shape. This equalizer was created to complement to high frequency rolloff of an average AM radio, effectively extending the transmission bandwidth of the radio. NRSC preemphasis is also available. To allow you to fine-tune audio texture further, three parametric equalizer sections with bell- shaped curves are available, along with Orban’s program adaptive high frequency enhancer.

12 12 OPTIMOD-AM 9400 The analog AM processing chain includes tunable highpass and lowpass filters. The lowpass filter tunable from 4.5 kHz to 9.5 kHz (NRSC). The filter is phase-linear and has a parametric rolloff shape, allowing you to trade off brightness against ringing. This is particularly useful with lower transmission bandwidths, like the 5.0 kHz required in HD-AM installations. The highpass filter is tunable from 50 to 100 Hz and includes 35 and 25 Hz notches.

13 13 OPTIMOD-AM 9400 The 9400 comes with dozens of format-specific presets for both analog AM and digital radio. You can easily mix and match AM analog and digital radio presets by importing any digital radio preset into the current on-air preset and then saving the result as a User Preset.

14 14 OPTIMOD-AM 9400 Customizing presets is easy with independent LESS-MORE controls for the AM and digital processing paths. For audio processing experts, there are almost one hundred advanced controls that allow you to tune the 9400’s audio processing at the same level as the factory programmers.

15 15 OPTIMOD-AM 9400 The 9400 has two AES3 digital outputs and two stereo analog output pairs. The output level and source (the low-delay monitor, analog AM or digital radio processing chains) can be selected independently for each output.

16 16 OPTIMOD-AM 9400 This means that the 9400 can drive up to four transmitters with complete versatility. For example, the 9400’s two AES3 outputs could drive an HD AM transmitter’s analog AM and HD inputs, leaving one 9400 analog output to drive a standby transmitter and the other analog output to drive talent headphones.

17 17 OPTIMOD-AM 9400 Four “transmission presets” can be selected by GPI remote control, 9400 PC Remote software, or by the 9400’s time-of-day automation. These contain the settings of the 9400’s Transmitter Equalizer, which can tune out tilt and overshoot in transmitters and antenna systems. This ensures highest average modulation and best RF coverage.

18 18 OPTIMOD-AM 9400 The transmission presets also contain: System lowpass filter cutoff frequency System lowpass filter cutoff shape System highpass filter cutoff frequency Positive peak threshold. The 9400 can create modulation asymmetry up to +150% on positive peaks.

19 19 Thanks to its unified design, the 9400 costs substantially less than a two-box configuration. It is also easier to control — you only have to program the time-of-day automation once and you only need one set of remote control connections.
