13 Buy too much Not planning meals in advance Not shopping to a list Tempted by ‘2 for 1’ specials and deals in store Cook too much Desire to have more than not enough Serving incorrect portion sizes Family members don’t finish their meals Poor storage of food Forgetting about food and leftovers in the fridge/freezer Unsure how to store food effectively Leaving food in its original packaging Why do we waste food

14 The problem of food waste in India India, the world’s largest producer of milk and the second-largest producer of fruits and vegetables, is also one of the biggest food wasters in the world –wasting INR 440 billion worth of fruits, vegetables and grains every year The challenge of feeding India’s billion plus people is not really about agriculture and food production but getting the food to the people. The biggest contributors to waste are the lack of refrigerated transport and adequate high quality cold storage facilities for both food manufacturers and food sellers

15 A survey shows that annually, Bangalore alone wastes 943 tones of quality food weddings. "This is enough to feed 2.6 crore people a normal Indian meal," survey of Bangalore's 531 marriage halls over a period of six months. "About 84,960 marriages are held at 531 kalyana mantapas (marriage halls) in Bangalore every year. About 943 tones of quality food is wasted in these halls annually. At an average cost of Rs 40 per meal, the total food wastage in the city is estimated at Rs 339 crore Example – Bangalore City
