1 The Reverse Trade Show: A Proactive Approach to Health Innovation “Building Abilities For Life” Lois Macklin, PhD Rehabilitation Research & Technology Development lois.macklin@albertahealthservices.ca Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital Edmonton, AB, Canada

Diverse and Complex Patient Needs 2  Annual admissions of over 2000 inpatients (average stay of 36 days)  Nearly 80,000 outpatient visits annually  Autism to stroke, prenatal to geriatric

Proactive Approach to Innovation “Technology holds significant promise for improving the delivery of rehabilitation medicine and improving patient outcomes” The Glenrose is proactively seeking collaborators for the development of innovations that enhance patient care Re-WALK EXOSKELETON

REVERSE TRADE SHOW NOVEMBER 19, 2013 12:00- 4:30 PM GLENROSE REHABILITATION HOSPITAL ROBBINS LEARNING CENTRE, ROYAL ALEXANDRA HOSPITAL 102 KINGSWAY AV, NORTHWEST, EDMONTON, AB SEEKING INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS

The Reverse Trade Show (RTS) Clinicians present their challenges to members of the innovation community in an open forum with the hope that solutions can be found Market “pull” approach 5

Challenges 6 1.Automatic Walker Brake 2.Walker Slow Down Brake 3.Custom Transfer Board 4.Develop Touch Table 5.Arm Cycle Games 6.Edema Tester 7.Hot/Cold Sensitivity Test 8.Develop Gripper Glove 9.Overhead Harness 10.Leg Stretcher 11.Lower Limb Walker Support 12.Rugged Hand Dynamometer 13.Hand and Wrist Exercise Device 14.Toilet Alert 15.Amputee Support Bench 16.Catheter Tray Problem 17.IV Tube Entanglement 18.Wound Tunneling Measurement Device 19.Hand Rest for Walker

Outcomes From 19 challenges presented at two Reverse Trade Shows:  2 are at the commercial stage  3 are in the prototype development stage  3 others have been solved alternatively  Some unanticipated innovations were brought forward because of the show  strengthened the relationship between the GRH and the innovation community 7

Challenges 8 1.Automatic Walker Brake 2.Walker Slow Down Brake 3.Custom Transfer Board 4.Develop Touch Table 5.Arm Cycle Games 6.Edema Tester 7.Hot/Cold Sensitivity Test 8.Develop Gripper Glove 9.Overhead Harness 10.Leg Stretcher 11.Lower Limb Walker Support 12.Rugged Hand Dynamometer 13.Hand and Wrist Exercise Device 14.Toilet Alert 15.Amputee Support Bench 16.Catheter Tray Problem 17.IV Tube Entanglement 18.Wound Tunneling Measurement Device 19.Hand Rest for Walker

Commercialized Products 9 Gripper Glove developed by Classic Health Supplies www.classichealth.com ReTouch Table developed by Rehabtronics www.rehabtronics.com

Other Innovations 10

Upside Advantages  Prioritization of clinical challenges  Relatively low risk to healthcare system  Proactive outside the procurement system  Relatively rapid implementation  Cultivates opportunities for SMEs 11 ReJoyce - developed by Rehabtronics in collaboration with the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital

Health Impact  Better tools and processes to fill those patient care challenges resulting in improved patient care  Build innovation capacity in frontline clinical staff  Process is potentially replicable in other healthcare settings 12

RTS – Challenges/Learnings  Internal AHS processes are risk averse  Funding limits next steps for many ideas as many of the industrial partners are smaller firms  Internal (GRH) capacity needs to be strengthened and internal roles related to innovation defined 13

One Thing Is Certain 14 Innovation is hard work! (especially in a publicly funded hospital)

Questions? 15 Discussing Transfer Board design at a Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital REVERSE TRADE SHOW
