2 2 Role of the SDP Coordinator 1.Who do you consider to be the key partners in the SDP process and what strategies might you employ to get them involved 2.Are there particular personal skills/attributes that are beneficial to the the role of SDP Coordinator 3.What types of resources or structures would usefully support the coordinator 4.What is the role of the Coordinator in terms externally driven planning needs versus internally driven planning needs 5.What are the emergent tensions/anxieties that may impede the process of SDP coordination

4 The Role of the Planning Coordinator may include: ---- Briefing the teaching staff on SDP Briefing/consulting with the external facilitator – preliminary stages Ongoing liaison with the external facilitator in terms of the development of the process and the establishment of scheduling and communication methods Facilitating aspects of the process or the whole process Liaising or consulting with task groups/planning teams Working with steering group/school management Developing/maintaining a ‘planning communications’ structure (e.g. a planning notice board) Editing/preparing/presenting draft materials Other !! (Ref. DGL’s Section 7)

5 1.Key Partners: All Staff, P and DP, Students, BOM, Community interests where appropriate, Ancillary staff, School secretary could have key role – could be involved in some planning meetings 2.Key Attributes: Trustworthy, Fair and balanced, ‘Not in anyone’s pocket’, Good communication skills, Approachable, Good reporting methods, Good secretarial/admin skills or access to such skills, Flexibility, Upfront about reality of SDP 3.Key Resources: Time for meetings, Timetabled slots for steering group, Secretarial support, ‘Coordination time’, Dedicated SDP notice board, SDP library/resource point 4.Internal Needs Vs External Needs: Use questionnaires, Achieve priority list that is representative, rationale for achieving balance, Keep all partners ‘in the picture’, Refer to ‘best’ (safe) practice 5.Key Tensions/Anxieties: Suitability for the job, Need for training –presentation/chairing/facilitation, Maintaining neutrality, Running effective meetings, reluctant staff member(s)
