2 Jazz Beginning  1920s Africans-Americans were apart of a great cultural movement called the Harlem Renaissance. Many African-Americans migrated to the North to Harlem, a neighborhood in New York. Jazz developed during the Harlem Renaissance

3 Jazz beginning (continued) Most early jazz was played I small marching bands or solo pianists. Jazz style emerged centered in New Orleans.

4 Paving the Way  Boogie-Woogie music helped pave the way for a new Genre of music called Rhythm and Blues.  Louis Armstrong helped pave way the for Duke Ellington.

5 Duke Ellington’s Bio  Duke Ellington was born April 29, 1899 in Washington D.C.  His birth name is Edward Kennedy Ellington.  He received the name (Duke) from a childhood friend who loved Dukes swagger and style.  He began playing the piano at the young age of seven.  At the age of 17 Duke taught himself harmony and made a debut. 

7 Louis Armstrong career He played in regular gigs in kid Ory’s band. He also played in parades. He moved to Los Angeles in 1930 where he played in a band called Louis Armstrong and his Sebastian New Cotton Club Orchestra. In June of that year he went back to New Orleans for the first time since he left in 1922 when he joined King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band.

10 Edward Hopper  Edward Hopper was born (July 22, 1882)  he sold his first oil painting in the Armory Show in 1913, he continued to pursue illustration as a career.  In 1920 Hopper had his first one- person exhibition at the Whitney Studio Club in New York, in 1924 he sold all of his works from a solo show at another New York gallery.
