WHAT IS A HEAT STROKE? the least common, but most severe heat- related illness occurs when the body’s temperature rises rapidly, the sweating system fails and the body cannot cool down Heat stroke is a medical emergency. It can cause permanent disability or even death.
Heat Stroke Symptoms High body temperature, >102°F Absence of sweating, with hot red or flushed dry skin Bluish lips and fingernails Rapid, weak pulse Rapid, shallow breathing Strange/Irrational behavior Hallucinations Confusion Agitation Disorientation Seizure and/or Unconsciousness
DO NOTS! Do not underestimate heat illness! Do not administer any antipyretics! (Tylenol, aspirin, etc.) Do not give caffeinated beverages! Do not give anything by mouth if the person is vomiting or unconscious!
Prevention is key! Stay hydrated BEFORE, DURING, and AFTER the activity If outdoors, look for shade Rest often Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing in hot weather Recognize and treat the symptoms early
