WHAT IS GROOVE PIZZA? A physical drum machine for kids and musical beginners Drum beats are created/displayed in a radial pattern Drum beats can be programmed and interacted with in real time
AUDIENCE AND PURPOSE Lack of physical electronic instruments for novices Lack of introductory resources for learning music production/DAW skills Lack of interactive, meaningful ways to explore and teach elements of contemporary music, particularly rhythm The music classroom alienates new students with new concepts and steep initial learning curve
OPERATION 12 o’clock is beat 1, 6 o’clock is beat 3, etc. Different layers trigger different drums/samples Conductive pepperonis are placed around the pizza to place beats Tempo and swing knobs One shot trigger/mute buttons allow for improvisation over the beat
TECHNOLOGY Conductive pepperonis complete circuits between ground and microcontroller (teensy 3.1) pins, triggering notes Currently, notes triggered via MIDI. Moving toward local sound file playback via teensy 3.1 audio breakout board Magnets behind foam board hold pepperonis in place Possibility for Bluetooth controllable web app
PLANS FOR FUTURE AND COMMERCIALIZATION Produce my own circuit boards and IC’s and/or find cheaper ones to cut production costs Experiment with wireless communications and/or implement local sound file playback via audio breakout board Continue to build more robust prototype(s) in different styles/ variations, look to partner with relevant partners Groove Cookie, etc.
