Compare and Contrast We are so much alike! We are quite different!

What do you already know about this skill? Use your prior knowledge. What does it mean to compare? What does it mean to contrast? My previous teachers taught me to compare and contrast by____________.

Compare What two or more things have in common- the similarities Can you find the similarities between us?

Contrast What two or more things don’t have in common- the differences How are we different?

A flashback- the Venn Diagram How does this work? In the middle of the Venn Diagram I would put ________________. In the outer parts of the circle I would put ____________________.

How does this Venn Diagram work?

Why should you care about comparing and contrasting? It helps you comprehend what you read. It exercises your higher level thinking skills. It is used in all subjects – language arts, science, social studies, unified arts. It helps you make decisions about the similarities and differences between items, places and people.

Middle School Expectations Using Compare and Contrast One difference, one similarity Two differences, two similarities with two different texts Compare and contrast character feelings A quote and then support with something from another text Use of harder text

We compare and contrast each time we need to make a decision between two (or more) things. For example, “Which ski resort is best for me?” Steven’s Pass rules! The Summit at Snoqualmi e rocks!

How are Steven’s Pass and The Summit at Snoqualmie the same? How are they different? Knowing this, which one is best for me? Steven’s Pass The Summit at Snoqualmie

Both animals migrate to find food. Locusts migrate to find additional vegetation because they are starving. Whales migrate to eat in the icy Arctic waters. Additionally, each returns to the place their journey began. Locusts move again and again until they return to their original location. Whales return to the Arctic each March. Both live in the water. Whales live in the Artic and Pacific Oceans. Eels make their home in American rivers and the Atlantic Ocean. Furthermore, no one knows how they find their way from one place to another. How whales find their way back to the Artic is a mystery. We also are unsure how eels find their way from the river to the Sargasso Sea. As you can see, whales and eels are quite alike.
