THESIS WORKSHOP A thesis is an argument Who is the creator of your artifact/topic? (The author) ? Why? To what literary end? What’s the impact? How is this conveyed? What have I taken note of that has made this stand out to me? Good theses convey the following What stands out to you? While Devon seems like a perfect utopia, the peace is always a façade under the surface. Through contrasts in nature, Knowles conveys that polarities are never pure—they combine and emphasize duality. PRO TIP: WRITE IN PRESENT TENSE. It IS a lit thing.
Leper and Finny fail to understand reality outside their own worlds’. Through indirect characterization of these idealists, Knowles suggests to deny the possibilities of evil is to invite evil consequences for yourself. PRO TIP: USE A LIT TERM AS YOUR HOW TO HONE
Knowles uses a garden of Eden archetype through symbolism to illustrate the change from innocence to harsh reality that the boys experience.
Through the Garden of Eden archetype, Knowles conveys the change from innocence to harsh reality. Devon follows the Garden of Eden archetype. The boys fall from innocence, just like Eve. Using Finny’s fading influence at the school, Knowles conveys the inevitable loss of innocence.
Through Gene's desire to become Finny, Knowles illustrates a doppelganger between both Gene and Finny to show the relationship of the boys. When Gene feels like he is living for Finny, he is the most repressed. Through their doppleganger relationship, Knowles suggests that guilt causes deep dependence.
Through the boys of Devon's always shifting their perception of enlisting, Knowles displays how they are unready to enlist in the first place. The boys constantly waver on enlistment, just as Devon resists peace. Their dynamic stance on war and Devon as a symbol illustrate how people hold on to youth.
