STRATEGIES & S.M.A.R.T. GOALS

VISION  A overall task you hope to accomplish  Generalized, not too specific  Core representation of the impact you want to make Example: Northeast Region 2014 – 2015 Vision Build the Northeast Region into a better resource for the areas and councils, while helping to successfully implement the new Venturing program changes.

SO…..LETS BE SMART ABOUT THIS….. SMART is an acronym for: Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timely What does this mean?

SPECIFIC  No generalizations  Clear, definite, and not vague  Determine:  Team Expectations  Goal importance  Involvement  Where will happen?  Key Attributes Ask Yourself What: What do I want to accomplish? Why: Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal. Who: Who is involved? Where: Identify a location. Which: Identify requirements and constraints.

MEASURABLE  Helps create a timeline of events  Set milestones  Shows progress toward completion  Helps a team stay on track  Adjust as needed A measurable goal will answer questions such as: How much? How many? How will I know when it is accomplished? Indicators should be quantifiable

ATTAINABLE  May stretch team limits, but not extreme  Not below standard or out of reach  Meaningful  Start with those most important  Develop the attitudes, abilities, skills, etc… to reach your goal An attainable goal will usually answer the question: How: How can the goal be accomplished?

REALISTIC  Find a goal that matters – relevance  Aligned with other goals  Find support:  Resources  Advocates A relevant goal can answer yes to these questions : Does this seem worthwhile? Is this the right time? Does this match our other efforts/needs? Are you the right person?

TIMELY  Deadline commitment  Plan ahead  Delegate A time-bound goal will usually answer the question: When? What can I do six months from now? What can I do six weeks from now? What can I do today?

PLANNING  Set a vision  Determine what you specifically want to accomplish (Specific)  Decide how you will track your progress (Measurable)  Evaluate if all factors are possible (Attainable)  Make sure your goal is reasonable (Realistic)  Set deadlines and a completion date (Timely)

2014 – 2015 NORTHEAST REGION CABINET GOALS 1. Gather training resources from Venturers throughout the region, making them available on the NERVE website. 2. Develop a roster of all youth and adults associated with Venturing Officers Associations. Encourage areas to do the same with their councils and districts. 3. Increase activity on Facebook and the NERVE website, using both to publicize the NERVE newsletter. 4. Host webinars and send out information regarding the Venturing program changes. 5. Host at least event yearly to encourage networking in the Northeast Region.

……..NOW ADD THE -ER  Evaluate  What worked?  What didn’t work?  Could things have be done differently?  Where can there be improvement  Revise  Learn from your mistakes  Adjust! Change isn’t always a bad thing!  Don’t fix what isn’t broken Don’t just me SMART, be SMARTER

Write down 2 – 3 personal goals. Remember: Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timely Evaluate Revise
