DIFFERENTIALS and DRIVE AXLES u Chapter 7 u Page 137 Classroom Manual u Page 247 Lab Manual
OBJECTIVES u Describe the purpose of a differential. u Identify the major components of a differential and explain their purpose. u Explain the need for drive pinion bearing preload. u Describe the difference between hunting, and nonhunting gear sets. CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK
OBJECTIVES u Explain the purpose of the major bearings within a differential assembly. u Describe the operation of a limited-slip differential. u Describe the construction and operation of a rear axle assembly. u Identify the two major designs of rear axle housings.
INTRODUCTION u Solid rear axle (with leaf or coil springs.) u IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) u Hypoid gear set (pinion below centerline) u FWD (helical cut ring and pinion) u Differential (allows different wheel speeds) CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK
SOLID REAR AXLE u Leaf Spring Suspension u Coil Spring Suspension
HYPOID GEAR SET u Pinion centerline is below Ring Gear centerline. CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK
FWD HELICAL CUT RING & PINION u Pinion can be called the Main shaft, Intermediate shaft, or u Transfer shaft.
DIFFERENTIAL u Allows each drive wheel to travel at different speeds, and different distances.
FUNCTION and COMPONENTS u Pinion mounted on two tapered bearings. u Differential case mounted on two tapered bearings 90 degrees to the pinion. u Pinion and differential bearings are PRELOADED no play. u Differential assembly is case, side gears, spider gears, and pin. Page 139 C CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK
DIFFERENTIAL OPERATION u Allows drive wheels to operate at different speeds, and travel different distances. u When traveling straight ahead both wheels rotate at the same speed and same distance. Page 140 C CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK
AXLE HOUSINGS u Two types of differential carriers: Integral carrier –Salisbury or Hotchis Removable carrier –Third member Page 145 C CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK
DIFFERENTIAL GEARS u Two types of RWD differential gears: Spiral Bevel –Ring & Pinion centerlines intersect Hypoid –Pinion centerline is below Ring gear centerline u Hypoid lube required! u Drive - Coast Page 146 C CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK
GEAR RATIO u Number of INPUT gear revolutions to equal One OUTPUT revolution. u Any # >1:1 = Underdrive u 1:1 = Direct drive u Any # <1:1 = Overdrive Driven Drive Page 148 C CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK
DETERMINING FINAL DRIVE u Decipher the “code” On the tag under a cover bolt. Differential housing tube. Door post. Page 149 C CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK
