2 Safari holiday breaks Home Animals Getting around Keeping safe Images What to look out for … The Giraffe is the tallest living land animal. Its height is up to 5.5 meters (18 feet) while its shoulders are at the height of 2.5 meters! Therefore you can easily spot any giraffe even from the long distance. It has got a long tail measuring up to 90 cm. Its weight ranges from 600 kg to kg (2 500 lb on average). The Giraffe has got a typical brownish and yellowish colour with reticulated pattern. Thank to their specific colour and pattern we can divide giraffes into several groups. The elephant is distinguished by its high level of intelligence, interesting behaviour, methods of communication and complex social structure. Elephants seem to be fascinated with the tusks and bones of dead elephants, fondling and examining them. The myth that they carry them to secret "elephant burial grounds," however, has no factual base. Elephants are very social, frequently touching and caressing one another and entwining their trunks. Elephants demonstrate concern for members of their families they take care of weak or injured members and appear to grieve over a dead companion. Three species of zebra still occur in Africa, two of which are found in East Africa. The most numerous and widespread species in the east is Burchell's, also known as the common or plains zebra. The other is Grevy's zebra, named for Jules Grevy, a president of France in the 1880s who received one from Abyssinia as a gift, and now found mostly in northern Kenya. (The third species, Equus zebra, is the mountain zebra, found in southern and southwestern Africa.)
