Surface Area of Prisms

Lesson Objective Students will work with a formula for the surface area of a prism.

Lesson Beginning In your own words, define surface area. List 3 real life examples where you would need to find surface area.

Surface Area of Prisms Surface area of a polyhedron is the sum of the areas of its faces. The surface area of any prism is the sum of the areas of the bases and the lateral faces. S = areas of bases + areas of lateral faces

Surface Area of a Rectangular Prism
SA = 2(lw + lh + wh)

Surface Area of Triangular Prisms
SA = Area of three rectangles + Area of two triangles

Modeling Find the surface area of the prism.

Practice Find the surface areas of the rectangular prisms

Modeling Find the surface area of the prism.

Practice Find the surface areas of the triangular prisms

Practice Fifty percent of the surface area of the bread is crust. What is the height h?

Practice Which prism has the greater surface area?

Practice Draw and label a rectangular prism that has a surface area of 158 square yards.

Practice Find the surface area.
