Are you ready for a crisis? There’s nothing like a crisis to bring out the worst (and the best) of your organization. No matter how prepared you think you are. Bad news:  You can have the perfect plan and still feel unprepared … Good news:  The more you plan and practice, the more efficient and timely your response will be.

But wait… Do I hear “but Lisa, that’s not MY job!” ?

Why worry?  5 Students Dead: Tornado Devastates University Of Alabama (5/11)  Virginia Tech Shooting Leaves 33 Dead 4/2007  Mike Leach FIRED (12/09)  Former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky arrested in child sex case; AD Tim Curley charged with perjury. (11/2011)  Duke Lacrosse Players Arrested on Rape Charges (4/2006)

Brand Reputation is EVERYONE’S Job!  If you are fortunate enough to be untouched by any type of crisis, say a prayer of thanksgiving…but consider this:  The Virginia Tech IT Department didn’t think they were in the PR business either. Until tragedy struck and their website crashed under the strain.  The community manager of Penn State’s Facebook page did not know what hit them, or how to respond…for days.  No one on the Texas Tech PR team (or the TTAA) knew that Leach was about to be fired.  I didn’t expect to sit in my pj’s hitting the refresh button, drinking beer to stave off panic attacks for the second half of my 2009 holiday break.

No matter what your title is, YOU can help prepare and support your team during a crisis response. …And you’ll be a hero. YOU’RE WELCOME!

Protect Your Brand  The EASIEST way to protect your brand is preparation.  How quickly you respond to a situation makes all the difference.  The new media landscape demands quick, detailed information. Without it, media will prolong the story until they get the information they want. What are you willing to share and with whom?  Getting accurate information out quickly allows you to stay in control. The longer you wait to release information, the more the negative sentiment builds.

Get Organized  The most important part of crisis response is prepared assets that can be accessed quickly (sample releases, contact lists, templates, etc.)  Encourage the use of multiple/redundant platforms to store protected digital assets utilizing imodule’s file library.

Create a File Library in iModules  With the file library, you can create a category or folder and set that to a specific audience. Then all the files in that folder can only be accessed by users who meet that criteria.  Create a page and you can then add a file library module to that page and users will be able to see the categories they have access to and download the files in those categories.  Disclaimer: this platform is better-suited to lap-top access.
