4 Notes 19.1 & 19.2 Enlightenment books and ideas were discussed in salons  public opinion became important in French society Aristocrats had to spend lots of time at Versailles causing the gap between nobles & peasants to widen The French were influenced to revolution by successful revolutions in Britain and America The 3 rd Estate had the most people but the least influence Louis XVI was weak and ineffective – he was a schlub! Louis XVI and Jacques Necker were unable to fix France’s finances National Assembly did away with the three estates then approved the Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen Girondans acted carefully when making changes Jacobins acted quickly and radically Napoleon successfully took over the National Convention asked to command troops to invade Italy
