TAKE IT UP A NOTCH Now that you have been practicing your analogies, it’s time to take it up a notch. We’re going to spend some time focusing on analogies that don’t fit into the typical types of analogies.
WHEN YOU COME ACROSS THESE ANALOGIES… You’ll think… Is this a SYNONYM relationship? No… Is this an ANTONYM relationship? No… Is this a PART OF relationship? No… Is this a KIND OF relationship? No… Is this a FUNCTION relationship? No…
LET’S GET STARTED. You already know that analogies look like this: _______ is to ________ as ________ is to _______. You also know that analogies are all about the relationship between the word sets. This is exactly how you will solve the following analogies.
1.Dresser is to bedroom as refrigerator is to _______. a.cooking b.frozen c.bathroom d.kitchen Step 1: Rule out the other types of analogies.
Is dresser a synonym for bedroom? No… Is dresser an antonym for bedroom? No… Is dresser a part of a bedroom? Kind of… but this relationship doesn’t seem to fit perfectly. Is dresser a kind of bedroom? No… Is dresser something that a bedroom does? No…
STEP 2: COME UP WITH A SENTENCE If none of the typical types of analogies fits, come up with a sentence that explains the relationship between the first set of words. Dresser is to bedroom as refrigerator is to _______. “A dresser is a type of furniture that can be found in a bedroom.”
STEP 3: APPLY IT TO THE SECOND SET OF WORDS Dresser is to bedroom as refrigerator is to _______. “A refrigerator is a type of furniture that can be found in a _______.”
STEP 4: SELECT YOUR ANSWER 1.Dresser is to bedroom as refrigerator is to _______. a.cooking b.frozen c.bathroom d.kitchen “A dresser is a type of furniture that can be found in a bedroom. A refrigerator is a type of furniture that can be found in a kitchen.”
Take a look at the following three slides. Try to solve each analogy on your own first. If you need help, or if you want to see the correct answer, click. As soon as you click, I’ll reveal the sentence I used to connect the two sets of words. If you click again, I’ll reveal the answer.
1.People are to oxygen as plants are to ______. a.beautiful b.carbon dioxide c.flowers d.sun “People need oxygen to survive. Plants need _____ to survive.”
2.Pride is to lions as herd is to _______. a.buffaloes b.flamingos c.honest d.wolves “A group of lions is called a pride. A group of ______ is called a herd.”
3. Law is to chaos as vaccination is to _______. a.medicine b.disease c.childhood d.health “Laws are used to prevent chaos. Vaccinations are used to prevent _____.”
HOW DID YOU DO? Keep studying your analogy packet as well as both PowerPoints. If you take the time to do this, you will do wonderfully on the HSPT.
