8 Teaching for Understanding: Key Principles (I) 1. The processes of teaching, learning, and assessment are inextricably linked. In effect, we are always assessing when teaching. Teaching for understanding requires active and sustained diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment: (a) Diagnostic assessment should assess students’ readiness levels, interests, and learning profiles. (b) Formative assessment should provide ongoing feedback and coaching to students, preparing them for (c) successful completion of rigorous, performance-based summative assessment tasks and projects. 2. To ensure understanding, students must be actively involved in the assessment process, with regular opportunities for self-reflection and self-evaluation based upon clearly articulated performance criteria presented in the form rubrics and related scoring tools.
9 Teaching for Understanding: Key Principles (II) 3. Teaching for understanding should reflect seven key instructional design principles, described by Wiggins and McTighe via the acronym “W.H.E.R.E.T.O.”: “W”=Where are we going? Why are we going there? How will we be assessed along the way? “H”=How will you hook and hold our attention? “E”=How will you provide us with coaching and feedback as part of ongoing, experience-based learning tasks? “R”=How will you help us to revisit, revise, rethink, and refine our learning? “E”=How will you help us to self-evaluate and self-express? “T”=How will you tailor our learning to meet our varying readiness levels, interests, and learning profiles? “O”=How will you organize our learning so that we move from acquisition to construction of meaning toward independent transfer and conceptual understanding?

24 Research on transfer and misunderstanding The research is sobering:Transfer of learning is widely considered to be a fundamental goal of education. When students cannot perform tasks only slightly different from those learned in class, or when they fail to appropriately apply their classroom learning in settings outside of school, then education is deemed to have failed.Unfortunately, achieving significant transfer of learning has proven to be a difficult chore.
