Know Your Enemy The Myth of the Comic Book Devil The Picture That Many Have In Mind Of The Devil

His Most-Used Title Devil Devil. The most-used title (as opposed to Satan, which is the most-used name) in Scripture for Satan is the New Testament word devil. It is a Greek word which literally means “tempter.” It is a title instead of a name because it is not a proper name at all. This is why it is not capitalized in the Bible. You could say that “Satan is the name while the word devil is the game.”

More Facts About Satan The father of all lies (John 8:44) He Is Not Everywhere -We must also stop blaming the devil for the corruptions of our own hearts. Our problems are usually of our own making. This is why the book of James does not trace our temptations and sin back to Satan but to our own lusts (James 1:13–15). We give the devil far more credit than he deserves. He work without being seen -As a spirit-being, Satan is normally invisible. Satan can be undetectable by the five senses. Thus in Luke 22:3 it says that Satan entered into Judas, yet no one saw it happen. Satan has the ability to appear in various forms just like any other angel. Angels can make themselves visible to the human eye and even produce a physical body which can be touched. For example, the two angels that went into Sodom to deliver Lot and his family could be seen and touched (Genesis 19:1, 10, 16). And throughout the New Testament, angels manifested physical bodies that could be seen (Matthew 28:2, 3, 5–7; Luke 1:11–20; John 20:12). Satan can also appear as an “angel of light” in order to deceive people into thinking that he is an angel of God. In 2 Corinthians 11:14, the apostle Paul said this very thing.

Facts About Satan's Limitations  Satan discusses Job with God. Read Job 1:6-13  Satan is accountable to God. 1:6  His thoughts are open to God. 1:7  Satan can only be at one place at a time. 1:6,7  Satan cannot see into our minds or foretell the future. 1:9-11  Because Satan can do nothing without God's permission, God's people can overcome his attacks through God's power. 1:12  God always puts limits on what Satan can do. 1:12, and 2:6  Satan is real and active on earth. 1:7

How can we resist Satan's devices? 1 Peter 5:8-9--"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour; whom resist stedfast in the faith." When Satan tried to tempt Him, what was Christ's weapon? "It is written." (Matthew 4:4-10). We should study the Bible, obey it, and we will find it a powerful defense against the enemy. In the strength of Christ, we should obey the commands and claim the promises.

What’s in a Name? Satan. This fallen angel is called “Satan” 53 times in Scripture. It is also his proper name. Thus when Jesus rebuked the devil when he had finished tempting Him, He used the devil’s proper name. He said, “Be gone, Satan!” (Matthew 4:10). The word Satan in the Hebrew and Greek simply means “adversary.” It refers to someone who is your enemy. The first reference to “Satan” in the Bible is found in 1 Chronicles 21:1. As is often the case, the first mention of something or someone in the Bible is very important. It will be to our benefit to look more closely at this passage to see what it says about Satan. Satan attacks nations as well as individuals. Satan has a special hatred for those nations where the truth is preached. Satan is able to motivate people to do things by putting ideas in their minds. Satan can implant thoughts even in believers. Satan can take something which seems perfectly innocent and use it to do evil. Satan hates it when God’s people love each other and are united in the cause of righteousness. Satan wants to destroy a believer’s walk with God and give God an occasion to punish him. Satan loves it when personal sin leads others to wickedness.

The Origin Of Satan? Where was Lucifer created? Luke 10:18--"I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.“ What special gifts did Lucifer possess? Ezekiel 28:12--"Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty." Lucifer was the wisest of the angels. In addition, he was "perfect in beauty." Apparently. Lucifer was also given an unusually beautiful voice. "The workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created." (Ezekiel 28:13). "Tabret" means strings or chords. Apparently. Lucifer's vocal chords were remarkable. What position did Lucifer occupy in heaven? Ezekiel 28:14--"Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so." In the earthly tabernacle, the two covering cherubim were by the ark of the covenant, which symbolized the throne of God. Therefore, in heaven. Lucifer once stood by God's throne. How did sin begin? Ezekiel 28:15--"Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee." Sin is without reason or excuse. To excuse it is to defend it. Lucifer chose to sin, and his act will ultimately lead to the destruction of many. God can not be charged with the origin of sin.

Old Testament Mentions Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! Indeed, the Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?” (Zechariah 3:1, 2). While Joshua the high priest was interceding for Israel, Satan was standing at his right hand as his adversary. The LORD had to rebuke Satan in order for Joshua to get on with the holy task of interceding for the people of God. Satan in the New Testament- Matthew 4:10, Matthew 16:22-23, Acts 26:17, 18

How did Satan begin his rebellion in heaven? Here were the five steps down: Ezekiel 28:17--"Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty. Thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness." Isaiah 14:13-14--"For thou hast said in thine heart,.. I will exalt my throne above the stars of God:.. I will be like the most High." Through pride, selfishness, and Jealousy, Lucifer corrupted himself into a devil. Lucifer, the light bearer, became Satan, the adversary. He began to question the government and character of God. Satan had to resort to lying to do this. Like many today, he said God's law could not be obeyed. Because of pride, he became filled with hatred. John 8:44--"He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own; for he is a liar, and the father of it." A third of the angels were fascinated with his talk and united with Satan. Then he and his angels made war in heaven. They were determined to kill and conquer their way to rulership. Revelation 12:7--"There was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels." Revelation 12:9--"The great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil; and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him." Proverbs 16:18--"Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall." 2 Peter 2:4--"God spared not the angels that sinned."

What is Satan doing now on earth, before he and his followers are finally destroyed? The devil is determined to tempt. harass, and destroy. He wants to take as many souls as possible down to ruin with him. Revelation 12:13--"And when the dragon [Satan] saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman [the true church]." Satan especially wants to destroy those who love God and try to obey Him. Revelation 12:17--"And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ." What is the future of Satan, the fallen angel? Isaiah 14:12--"How art thou fallen from heaven, 0 Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!" Satan, who ruined so many, will himself eventually be destroyed. Ezekiel 28:16--"Thou hast sinned; therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, 0 covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire." When Satan is finally destroyed, his followers will perish with him. 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12--"Because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: that they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness."

Who alone is able to destroy the devil? Hebrews 2:14--"Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil." Jesus Christ, who died to redeem those, who would come to Him in repentance and putting away of their sins, will be the one who will destroy Satan. How will Satan and his followers finally be destroyed? Matthew 25:41--"Then shall He [Christ] say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from Me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels." At the end of time, Christ will destroy Satan and his followers. Malachi 4:1--"And the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch." Satan is the root: his followers the branches. That hellfire will consume them, and they will be gone forever.

What warning is given us that this terrible deception will especially exist in the last days? 1 Timothy 4:1--"Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils." We, who live in the last days, must be especially on guard. It is imperative that we study God's Word daily, pray, and plead for His guidance and protection. How will Satan deceive men in these last days? 2 Corinthians 11:14--"And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness. Satan will work great wonders through his special agents. Yet those men will deny basic Bible truths about the plan of redemption and the importance of obedience to Gods Word. Matthew 24:23-24--"Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect." Satan will also, in the sight of men, bring down fire from the skies. Revelation 13:13-14--"And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, and deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live." Beware, beware! Satan's devices captivate those willing to consider them. If any man comes to you with a message, purportedly from God, but which is not in the law or the testimony--flee from him. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10--"Whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish."

Satan’s Eternal Punishment Satan's Eternal Punishment Read Matthew 25:41 and Revelation 20:1-3, 10. In Matthew 25:41, Jesus says, "Then I will turn to those on my left and say, 'Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons'." Revelation 20:1-3,10 Satan's power is not eternal--he will meet his doom. He began his evil work in mankind at the beginning, in Genesis 3:1-6 it is recorded), and continues it today, but he will be judged when he is thrown into the Lake of Fire. Satan was released from the bottomless pit (20:7), but he will never be released from the Lake of Fire. He will never be a threat to anyone again. 2 Timothy 2:22 says, "Run from anything that gives you the evil thoughts young men often have, but stay close to anything that makes you want to do right. Have faith and love, and enjoy the companionship of those who love the Lord and have pure hearts." Running away is sometimes considered cowardly. But wise people realize that removing oneself physically from temptation is often prudent. Perhaps you experience a recurring temptation that is difficult to resist. Remove yourself physically from the situation. Knowing when to run is as important in spiritual battle as knowing when and how to fight. James 1:12 says, "Happy is the man who doesn't give in and do wrong when he is tempted, for afterwards he will get as his reward the crown of life that God has promised those who love Him." Read Romans 8:38 and 1 Corinthians 10:13.
