Approaches to Publish rather than Perish: Some Lessons from the School of Hard Knocks Dr. John Loomis, Professor Dept. of Ag & Resource Economics Colorado State University

My Data Drawn from Successful Tenure & Promotion at UC Davis and Colorado St. U Reviewer on Several Tenure & Promotions at Land Grant Universities Journal Reviewer & Associate Editor at two Journals

Strategically Design Your Studies to Produce at least 2 Articles 1. Policy or Empirical Case Study Article –Answering policy relevant or topical issue –(Methods used are of secondary importance) 2. Methodological Article –Comparison of methods, estimators is focus –(Particular case study is of secondary interest)

Carefully Select Journal Don’t Aim too high –An accepted article in regional or specialty journal is worth more than a rejection from a top journal early in your career

Carefully Select Journal Don’t Aim too high –An accepted article in regional or specialty journal is worth more than a rejection from a top journal early in your career –Check the references you have cited in your paper to find an appropriate journal –Have colleagues provide guidance on where to submit (some journals change editors some do not).

Be Persistent in Responding to Reviewers! Take it!If Editor gives you a chance (Revise & Resubmit) Take it!

Be Persistent in Responding to Reviewers! Take it!If Editor gives you a chance (Revise & Resubmit) Take it! Try to accommodate reviewers requests for additional analysis, literature, etc. –You don’t have to do everything they ask. –Explain why you can’t or not appropriate. –Acknowledge limitations of paper on what you can’t do Responding and Revising is hard work but often worth it (you’ve got a nibble).

Having Good Co-authors can be the Key to Publishing Division of labor & Specialization applies to research studies (Data collection vs econometrics) Can add Co-author if need expertise to meet reviewers requests for new analyses.

Manuscript submission stopping rules A good rule is three strikes and your out! –If after sequentially trying three different journals (especially if 3 rd one is a high acceptance rate journal), move on! –Time is probably better spent on new work

Manuscript submission stopping rules A good rule is three strikes and your out! –If after sequentially trying three different journals (especially if 3 rd one is a high acceptance rate journal), move on! –Time is probably better spent on new work –But think about reviewers comments as lessons learned from the rejection (e.g. poor theory- empirical connection)
