STOP…LOOK…LISTEN LESSON ELEVEN Today’s Lesson: Jesus’ Men Theme: Respecting Jesus’ apostles and their authority Objective: To learn how the apostles represent Jesus and exercise authority Key passages: Matt. 10:1-39; Luke 6:12-16; John 14:16- 21; 15:26-27; 16:12-15 “Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?” (Lk. 20:2)
STOP…LOOK…LISTEN Matt. 10:1-15; Luke 6:12-16 – What is authority? (consider John 19:10; Lk. 5:24; Lk. 7:8) – What sort of authority did Jesus give His apostles? – What were the apostles to do if a town wouldn’t listen to their teaching? – Read 1 Cor. 14:37. Whose commandments did Paul preach? – If I quote from the U.S. Constitution, I am making up new laws? – If the apostles stated the commands Jesus gave them, were they making up new laws? – Read Gal. 1:11-12. What was the source of Paul’s doctrines? – Read 2 Cor. 10:8 and 13:10. What was the source of the apostles’ authority, and for what did they use it?
STOP…LOOK…LISTEN Matt. 10:16-23, 28-39 – What does “apostle” mean? – How would you feel if Jesus chose you to be an apostle? – What sort of things did Jesus warn the apostles about? – What promises did Jesus make His apostles?
STOP…LOOK…LISTEN John 14:16-21; 15:26-27; 16:12-15 – If you were an apostle, how would you feel if Jesus told you He was going to leave you? – Who is the Helper Jesus promised the apostles and how would the Helper help them? – Read 1 Cor. 2:7-13. Who chose the words that the apostles spoke? – Did the Holy Spirit give them specific words, or just ideas that they explained as they understood them? – Read 2 Tim. 3:16-17 and 2 Pet. 1:16-21. What does “inspired” mean? Next time: lesson 12!
