Beyond Entitled Christianity John 6:53-71 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever." He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Beyond Entitled Christianity On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?" Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you? What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. Yet there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65 He went on to say, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him."

Beyond Entitled Christianity From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God." Then Jesus replied, "Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!" 71(He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)

Beyond Entitled Christianity Am I a soldier of the cross? A foll’wer of the Lamb? And shall I fear to own his cause or blush to speak his name? Must I be carried to the skies on flow’ry beds of ease, while others fought to win the prize and sailed through bloody seas?

Beyond Entitled Christianity You-can-really-do-something-for-me-disciple John 6:14-15 After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did [feeding of five thousand], they began to say, “urely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world." 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself. After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did [feeding of five thousand], they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world." 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.NIV

Beyond Entitled Christianity Meet-my-spiritual-need disciples John 6:25-27 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?" Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval."

Beyond Entitled Christianity Give-me-a-sign disciple John 6:30-33 So they asked him, "What miraculous sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'" Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."

Beyond Entitled Christianity The problems so many of us have is that we want to follow God on our terms. “God, I will follow you if… - you bless me.” - you keep things comfortable.” - I don’t have to surrender my soul.”

Beyond Entitled Christianity What we do is rationalize… “I’ll get my act together when I am out of the house” “I’ll put my spiritual activism in focusing on over coming some vice, instead of surrendering my heart”

Beyond Entitled Christianity What we do is rationalize, using our theology… I am saved by grace not by works; I am a sinner anyway, therefore, since no one is perfect, I am just fine. So, if I hurt others by my gossiping or criticisms, or I am self- centered, or I remain spiritually immature, or I…, it’s okay because no one is perfect.

What Will Be True For You? Will you become one with Christ and His mission? John 6:52-55 John 6:52-55 Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.

What Will Be True For You? Will the strength for your life come out of your close walk with Christ? John 6:56-58 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever." Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever."

You’re Right: This Is Hard The moment of truth John 6:60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?"

You’re Right: This Is Hard Each of Jesus’ disciples had that moment of truth. Mark 10:43-45 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

You’re Right: This Is Hard Are you satisfied with entitled faith? Immature walk? 1 Cor 3:12-15 If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames. 16 You’re Right: This Is Hard The spiritual turning point for many John 6:66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.

So What Are You Going To Do About It? Are there no foes for me to face? Must I not stem the flood? Is this vile world a friend to grace to help me on to God? Sure I must fight if I would reign increase my courage, Lord! I’ll bear the toil, endure the pain, supported by Thy word.
