Two Overlooked Factors In Evangelism Christians’ love and unity directly and positively affect our efforts to evangelize the lost
Introduction To reach the lost, we must be careful to stay true to the gospel message But, there are two overlooked factors that positively affect our evangelistic efforts These are how we love one another as Christ loved us and our being unified together in following the apostles’ teaching Failing to love each other and be unified with God and each other will negatively affect our efforts to reach the lost
Love One Another As Christ Loved Us Joh 13:34 "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. Joh 13:35 "By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."
Be One Together As Jesus Is One With The Father Joh 17:20 "I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; Joh 17:21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.
Two Overlooked Factors In Evangelism 1.Love one another as Christ loved us 2.Be one together as Jesus is one with the Father
Background To Jesus Command To Love One Another Jesus ate the Passover with His disciples and introduced His memorial supper After supper, to overcome the selfishness and pride of His disciples, Jesus showed humble loving service by washing their feet This was a lowly task usually done by servants or by each individual if no servant was available
Selfishness and Pride Threaten The Disciples’ Faith and Mission Luk 22:21 "But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Mine on the table. Luk 22:22 "For indeed, the Son of Man is going as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!" Luk 22:23 And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this thing.
Selfishness and Pride Threaten The Disciples’ Faith and Mission Luk 22:24 And there arose also a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest. Luk 22:25 And He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who have authority over them are called 'Benefactors.'
Selfishness and Pride Threaten The Disciples’ Faith and Mission Luk 22:26 "But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant. Luk 22:27 "For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.
Selfishness and Pride Threaten The Disciples’ Faith and Mission Joh 13:1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. Joh 13:2 During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him,
Jesus Washed His Disciples’ Feet Joh 13:3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, Joh 13:4 *got up from supper, and *laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself.
Jesus Washed His Disciples’ Feet Joh 13:5 Then He *poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.
At First Peter Rejects Jesus Washing His Feet Joh 13:6 So He *came to Simon Peter. He *said to Him, "Lord, do You wash my feet?" Joh 13:7 Jesus answered and said to him, "What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter." Joh 13:8 Peter *said to Him, "Never shall You wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me."
At First Peter Rejects Jesus Washing His Feet Joh 13:9 Simon Peter *said to Him, "Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head." Joh 13:10 Jesus *said to him, "He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you." Joh 13:11 For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, "Not all of you are clean."
Meaning of Jesus Washing His Disciples’ Feet Jesus shows them an example of humble sacrificial love Jesus did what was needed to be done as a humble servant Jesus’ example is not only for them but for us that we may love one another humbly sacrificing and serving each other meeting spiritual and physical needs
Meaning of Jesus Washing His Disciples’ Feet Joh 13:12 So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? Joh 13:13 "You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. Joh 13:14 "If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.
Meaning of Jesus Washing His Disciples’ Feet Joh 13:15 "For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you. Joh 13:16 "Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. Joh 13:17 "If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
Love One Another As Christ Loved us He says this is a new commandment, our love must be patterned after His humble self sacrificing love which was ultimately displayed on the cross Our love for each other must be observable to the world in and out of our assemblies Our love for each other is a proof to the world we are His disciples
Love One Another As Christ Loved us Joh 13:34 "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. Joh 13:35 "By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."
The Cross Greatest Display of Jesus’ Love Joh 15:12 "This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Joh 15:13 "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. Joh 15:14 "You are My friends if you do what I command you.
Love One Another As Christ Loved us 1Jn 3:16 We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 1Jn 3:17 But whoever has the world's goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him? 1Jn 3:18 Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.
Love One Another As Christ Loved us Eph 5:1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; Eph 5:2 and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.
Love Displayed In Our Assemblies Heb 10:24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, Heb 10:25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
Love Displayed In Our Assemblies Act 2:44 And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; Act 2:45 and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need.
Love Displayed In Our Assemblies Act 2:46 Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, Act 2:47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.
Love Displayed Every Day 1Co 13:4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 1Co 13:5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,
Love Displayed Every Day 1Co 13:6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 1Co 13:7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love Displayed Every Day Gal 5:13 For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. Gal 5:14 For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." Gal 5:15 But if you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another.
Love Displayed Every Day 1Pe 4:8 Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. 1Pe 4:9 Be hospitable to one another without complaint.
Two Overlooked Factors In Evangelism 1.Love one another as Christ loved us 2.Be one together as Jesus is one with the Father
Be One Together As Jesus Is One With The Father As we love one another as Jesus loved us, the world can readily understand we are Jesus’ disciples But, along with love, we must seek to be unified together in the same way Jesus is unified with the Father Jesus and the Father are perfectly united in purpose and action
Be One Together As Jesus Is One With The Father This unity must be based on the apostles’ teaching and must be easily seen by the world When they see this unity, they will be more convinced Jesus was sent by the Father When they see division, they conclude the opposite, He was not sent by the Father Compromising the Word of God is not an option to attain unity
Be One Together As Jesus Is One With The Father Joh 8:29 "And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him." Joh 10:30 "I and the Father are one." Joh 17:22 "The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one;
Be One Together As Jesus Is One With The Father Joh 17:23 I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Joh 17:24 "Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
Be One Together As Jesus Is One With The Father Joh 17:25 "O righteous Father, although the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me; Joh 17:26 and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them."
Be One Together As Jesus Is One With The Father 1Co 1:10 Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment.
Only Standard For Unity Is The Apostles’ Teaching Joh 17:8 for the words which You gave Me I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from You, and they believed that You sent Me. Joh 17:17 "Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. Joh 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
Only Standard For Unity Is The Apostles’ Teaching Joh 16:12 "I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. Joh 16:13 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
Only Standard For Unity Is The Apostles’ Teaching Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. Act 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Only Standard For Unity Is The Apostles’ Teaching Act 2:41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. Act 2:42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Only Standard For Unity Is The Apostles’ Teaching 1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
Behavior Required To Promote And Maintain Unity Eph 4:1 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, Eph 4:2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, Eph 4:3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Behavior Required To Promote And Maintain Unity Eph 4:4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; Eph 4:5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, Eph 4:6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.
Behavior Required To Promote And Maintain Unity Eph 4:11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, Eph 4:12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;
Behavior Required To Promote And Maintain Unity Eph 4:13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. Eph 4:14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;
Behavior Required To Promote And Maintain Unity Eph 4:15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, Eph 4:16 from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.
Behavior Required To Promote And Maintain Unity Php 2:1 Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, Php 2:2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.
Behavior Required To Promote And Maintain Unity Php 2:3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; Php 2:4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.
Behavior Required To Promote And Maintain Unity Php 2:5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, Php 2:6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,
Behavior Required To Promote And Maintain Unity Php 2:7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Php 2:8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
The Word Must Never Be Compromised For The Sake of Unity 1Co 11:18 For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it. 1Co 11:19 For there must also be factions among you, so that those who are approved may become evident among you.
The Word Must Never Be Compromised For The Sake of Unity 1Co 4:6 Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively applied to myself and Apollos for your sakes, so that in us you may learn not to exceed what is written, so that no one of you will become arrogant in behalf of one against the other.
The Word Must Never Be Compromised For The Sake of Unity Gal 1:6 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; Gal 1:7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.
The Word Must Never Be Compromised For The Sake of Unity Gal 1:8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! Gal 1:9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!
The Word Must Never Be Compromised For The Sake of Unity Gal 1:10 For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ.
The Word Must Never Be Compromised For The Sake of Unity Rom 16:17 Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them. Rom 16:18 For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting.
The Word Must Never Be Compromised For The Sake of Unity 2Jn 1:9 Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. 2Jn 1:10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting;
The Word Must Never Be Compromised For The Sake of Unity 2Jn 1:11 for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds.
Two Overlooked Factors In Evangelism 1.Love one another as Christ loved us 2.Be one together as Jesus is one with the Father
