Henderson 12/23/07 Lesson # Thessalonians 5:4-11 The Day of the Lord part 2 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; 5 for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; 6 so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober. 7 For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. 8 But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. 9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.

Henderson 12/23/07 Lesson # Thessalonians 5:1-7 The Day of the Lord 1 Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. 2 For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. 3 While they are saying, "Peace and safety!" then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; 5 for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; 6 so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober. 7 For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night.

Henderson 12/23/07 Lesson # But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; you are not in darkness darkness - skótos - spiritual darkness, implying ignorance or error see the following: John 8:12, John 12:46 and 1 John 1:5 the day would overtake you like a thief; “the day” – what is this referring to ? overtake - katalambanō - properly signifies "to lay hold of;" then, "to lay hold of so as to possess as one's own, to appropriate." like a thief or as a thief that the day shall come down upon you as a thief (Wuest)

4 R. Henderson 12/23/07 Lesson # for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; sons of light and sons of days vs sons of darkness and sons of night see the following: John 12:36 and Eph. 5:18 concerning light Col. 1:13 and 1 Peter 2:19 concerning darkness

Henderson 12/23/07 Lesson # so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober. 7 For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. let us not sleep as others do sleep - katheúdō - to sleep, fall asleep, be fast asleep, to be spiritually asleep – (not the same as in 1 Thess. 4:13) but let us be alert and sober alert - grēgoreúō - to watch, to refrain from sleep – from the word “to arise, arouse.” sober - néphō - to be sober-minded, watchful, circumspect

Henderson 12/23/07 Lesson # For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, God has not destined us for wrath destined - tithēmi - "to put," is used of "appointment" to any form of service wrath - orgē -originally any "natural impulse, or desire, or disposition, "came to signify "anger," as the strongest of all passions see verse: 1 Thess 1: who rescues us from the wrath to come God has destined for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ

To aid, help, comfort, encourage. build up - oikodoméō - to build, construct, erect. Metaphorically, to build up, establish, confirm. just as you also are doing
