The Anglo Saxons settled in Britain after the invasion. They built homes and farms and created villages and towns. What clues in the picture tell you that these were settlers rather than invaders? Sutton Hoo is the name of a hillside in Sussex where there were several ancient burial mounds. In 1939 the owner of the land, Mrs. Pretty, asked some archaeologists to dig up one of the mounds. Other mounds had been dug up before, but nothing interesting had been found. This was because the things in the other mounds had been stolen long ago. But this mound had not had anything stolen from it. It was full of interesting artefacts. However, there was no body in the grave, not even a skeleton. Only the objects in the grave could provide clues to who was buried there.

The earth in the grave was in an unusual shape, as if something had been lying there and made a mark. Can you guess what it might have been? Here is a clue: It was a ship! The wooden ship had rotted away, but the mark it made in the earth could still be seen.

What does this tell us about the person who was buried at Sutton Hoo? Think about the artefacts that were found in the grave. Do they give us any clues about the person who was buried there? What sort of things is it impossible to find out from the grave?

An Anglo Saxon Case Study The Anglo-Saxons came from Germany, Denmark and Holland They were made up of three groups: The Angles, who settled in the North of England, in Northumbria and Mercia The Saxons, who settled in the East of England, around East Anglia. The Jutes, who settled in the South of England, around Wessex. Many of them came to Britain because of flooding in their own countries
