Hand, arm, Foot and leg safety No peglegs, no hooks from my class

General safety Do not use machinery with the guards removed. Do not place your hands or any other appendages in the path of the machinery. Do not place hands or feet near a pinch hazard. Do not place hands closer than 4 inches to any cutting blade

Glove safety Use leather gloves when welding, cutting, moving supplies, or handling sheetmetal Use approved rubber gloves when dealing with bodily fluids, chemicals, oils, or electricity Use caution when moving heavy materials as gloves will not protect against pinch hazards

Glove not-safety Do not use gloves when operating any saws, drills, planers, routers, drill presses, or other machinery that has a cutting blade Do not use leather gloves when handling chemicals Do not use gloves when working around rotating shafts like those on the p.t.o. of a tractor

Glove safety Always use the appropriate glove for the job Impact resistant Leather Vinyl/rubber/latex Electrically rated Steel mesh

Impact resistant Made by companies like mechanix Made of synthetic leather with padded palms and fingers Use in high vibration jobs –Impact wrench –Impact hammer –Jack hammer

Leather gloves Use these when handling materials or welding Use welding or other specialty gloves for handling hot objects Do not use in wet locations because leather gloves will harden and lose dexterity

Rubber/latex Use these for body fluids or other hazardous chemicals Do not use latex gloves if you have an allergy use the vinyl/nitrile substitute Use when the safety of others is in question. Use on grease to keep from frequent hand washing and to decrease cancer risk

Electrically rated These gloves are used by electricians working on potentially live circuits They protect against up to 30,000 volts They must be tested every 6 months for holes Gloves out of test over 1 yr can not be used until tested

Electrical gloves

Steel mesh gloves Used in meat cutting industry Guards against cuts from sharp knives Does not guard against saws and blunt trauma from cleavers

Foot safety To guard against foot injury no open toed shoes are allowed in the shop. No flip flops, sandals, heels, jellies, etc I prefer you wear leather shoes with sturdy soles: boots, shop shoes, etc OSHA requires steel toed shoes in industry

Toe and foot injuries

Foot injury prevention Watch where you step Wear proper footwear Do not drop things on the floor, place them with your hands Keep the floor in your work area clean Do not place things where they are a trip hazard for others

Clothing safety Loose clothing should not be worn in the lab Loose clothing is a snare hazard on any with rotating parts Sleeves should be rolled up to the elbow and shirts should be tucked in to avoid accidents

Jewelry safety Do not wear jewelry in the shop Ring hazards Bracelet hazards Watch hazards

Ring injury

Bracelet hazards Bracelets like rings can conduct electricity or snag and draw you into machinery

Watch hazards Watches can become tangled in work and draw in your hand Welding slag can become trapped behind the band and cause severe burns

Hand injuries from drills Drills can catch in the workpiece rotating and breaking bones, squishing fingers or striking the body (especially using auger) Do not put work into the drill press without securely clamping it down Never try to stop a workpiece that is rotating in the drill press
