After the story the children will name the animals the polar bear met and predict if they could survive in the Arctic. Activities The children will brainstorm how polar bears survive cold weather and icy water. The children will draw pictures of clothing they wear to keep warm. Each child will share an idea of clothing that keeps them warm for the pie chart.
Experiment The teacher will demonstrate making a blubber glove. Measure one cup of Crisco. Fill ziploc bag with cup of Crisco. Use a second ziploc bag to place around outside of ziploc bag with Crisco in it. Materials Sandwich bags Bowl of water Ice cubes
Cooperative Groups The students will work in cooperative groups to make blubber gloves. The teacher will place a bowl of icy water on the table. The students will measure the temperature of the water with a thermometer. The students immerse their left hand in icy water. The students will place right hand in blubber glove and immerse in icy water.
