Concealed Carry Methods

Why Concealed Carry? In order to protect Loved ones Yourself Other citizens From From death or severe injury from Sociopaths Wild Animals

First Rule of Concealed Carry Conceal it!!! No Flashing No Printing No Dropping No Losing No Talking About It

The Concealed Carry Compromise The Speed of Presentation Vs. The Concealability

Effective Concealed Carry Anticipate the environment Choose the appropriate wardrobe Choose the appropriate holster Choose the appropriate weapon Train to use the choices

Anticipate the Environment Body Posture Sitting Standing Moving Driving Likely Threat Scenario (never sure) Inside Office Car Outside Open area Populated

Anticipate the Environment Human Interaction Family − Adults − Children − Familiarity Unknown Persons − Gun friendly − Gun unfriendly Athletic Movement − Running − Walking − Jumping − Reaching Temperature/Weather Appropriate attire for weather or occasion

Choose the Wardrobe Fit in Don’t wear Levis to the wedding (Hood River may be okay) Dress according to the weather Would you pick up a hitchhiker wearing a heavy coat on a 90 degree day? Ensure wardrobe will conceal as necessary (concealment garment) Heavier materials Dark prints Waist band big enough

Choose the Holster Safety All holsters should shroud the trigger Do not carry a pistol loose in a pocket Retention should match movement and risk Thumb break Finger release Friction hold Masking Holster should aid in concealing the weapon Ease of Access Quick draw Ease of re-holstering Quiet draw

Choose the Holster Body Position: Waist band Standard Belt or Trouser Retained Holster (Duty) IWB – Inside the Waist Band SOB – Small Of the Back Cross Draw Appendix Carry Belly Band Ankle Shoulder Holster Pocket Carry External Carry Fanny Pack Purse Daytimer Other Specialty Clothes Smart Carry/Thunderwear

Choose the weapon Which is the right weapon? The one you will carry!

Choose the Weapon Smallest caliber for effective stopping of a human target (choose one):.380 Auto 9mm.38 Special.40 S&W.45 ACP

Choose the Weapon So Really - which one do I want? People have been killed with BB guns There is a balance between stopping power and accuracy The lower the stopping power, the higher the accuracy requirement

What to Wear? Right clothes for the occasion A holster that matches the environment and the weapon A weapon that can be concealed and still be effective

The End Questions Comments on the presentation quality, relevance, constructive criticism What would be of most interest for future meetings?

The Responsible Gun Owner Understands the law Understands deadly force Is a model citizen Trains his/her mind through visualization/education Trains one’s self on the safe and effective use of the weapon

The Commitment to Carry Changes in attitude The model citizen Non-confrontational Avoid anti-social behavior in yourself Know your reactions Fight Flee Acquiesce/subordinate Bluff/Challenge Changes in life style Avoid areas of obvious risk Avoid areas of antisocial or asocial behavior Changes in wardrobe Less revealing Oversize

Training for CCW “In Context” Realistic scenario – train like you fight Never assume one target − As soon as you mentally or physically have stopped the threat, look around for the next Practice tactical reloads/weapon clearance Practice (including draws) − One handed − Off handed − Prone − Multiple targets − Prioritizing targets

Training for CCW Practice drawing from all holsters with all guns to be used in that holster Start dry firing with unloaded weapons, or Aimsoft simulation Start slow but smooth, put in context to develop habit patterns Muzzle control Muscle memory Tactical relevance Culminate with live fire from the holster (we are lucky to have a range upon which we can do that) Vary your targeting and angle of presentation

Rules of Dry Fire Proper Mind Set Treat with the respect deserving of a lethal weapon Familiarity breeds complacency Complacency causes Negligent Discharges Control of Your Environment No TV or Stereo Take telephone off the hook Close the drapes Send the family on an errand Select a simple target sized for the distance at which you want to be accurate (farther away, smaller target) Don’t use common objects as targets (TV) Place target in front of something capable of stopping a bullet

Rules of Dry Fire cont. Separation from Ammunition Unload the weapon and put ammunition in another room Chamber check the weapon Recite the mantra “ the weapon Is unloaded and I am ready for dry practice” Reset Put away the target at the end of practice (one more time syndrome) At the end of practice, return the weapon to fighting mode in its appropriate location and say out loud “the weapon is loaded and dry fire is over.”
