Today’s Checklist Toonie Assignments? Reminders –Quiz on Friday –Toonie Assignment displays on Tuesday A Change is Gonna Come reflection The principles of social justice note The principles practice

Social justice inspiration A Change is Gonna Come Which principles of social justice are referred to in this song?

The Principles of Social Justice All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men and women do nothing. Edmund Burke I find it kind of funny; I find it kind of sad….It’s a mad world. Gary Jules Kim Jong Il Mohamed Farad Aidid Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Martin Luther King Jr.

1. HUMAN DIGNITY—Above all else, human life is precious. It needs to be respected, regardless of race, culture, ethnic background, gender, age, sexual preference, etc. We owe it to God and ourselves to cherish the human being.

2. THE COMMON GOOD—As humans we must work for the betterment of all people. Only by serving the community’s (local, national and global) needs to we progress. We are all in this life together so we need to show our solidarity (a sense of understanding and support of what others are going through) to develop a better world. Thy songs were made for the pure and free, They shall never sound in slavery! From “The Minstrel Boy,” a traditional anti-war ballad

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” Thomas Jefferson “There is room enough for everyone’s need, not but not for everyone’s greed.” Mahatma Gandhi

3. THE PREFERENTIAL OPTION FOR THE POOR – God has a special love for the poor and calls His people to a covenant of love and justice. It is a teaching founded on the life and words of Jesus Christ, who came “to bring glad tidings to the poor…liberty to captives…recovery of sight to the blind’ (Luke 4:18- 19). Catholic social teaching is built on a commitment to the poor. Whatever happened to the values of Humanity?

4. Stewardship — God calls humans to be caretakers of the earth they inhabit. We are here stewards of the world and the animals. We are not supposed to abuse the land and seas; i.e. acid rain, clear cutting the rainforest, strip mining, oil spills, hunting a species to extinction, etc. The Amazon rainforest is home to thousands of species, some found no other place on earth. These forests produce oxygen, which combats the greenhouse effect and global warming. An example of clear cutting along the Amazon river in Brazil. Each day hundreds of trees in rainforest are cut down. Few seedlings are replanted. These birds off the coast of Alaska will die if the oil is not cleaned from their bodies and wings. Since the Alaskan shoreline is so remote, how many birds do you think will be saved? Every year thousands of seals in the Canadian Arctic are slaughtered for their skins. We won’t have a society if we destroy the environment. Margaret Mead

Power corrupts…. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Lord Acton Justice means nothing but what is in the interests of the stronger party. Plato The Emperor Caligula. During his reign, the Roman government killed thousands of Christian citizens. Methods of execution ranged from hungry lions to crucifixion. A picture of calculated ruthlessness, August Pinochet tortured and killed tens of thousands of his fellow countrymen when he seized power in Chile in 1973. We are richer than God himself. Anonymous Enron Executive, 2000 Enron, an energy corporation in the U.S., cooked the books and mislead its shareholders. The employee retirement fund was also mishandled. As a result, many long time employees lost their pensions. 5. Subsidiarity — is an extension of the principle of human dignity. The government and corporations (i.e. all employers) exist to empower the individual. These institutions are obligated to provide social conditions necessary to the full development of the individual, such as the right to work, decent housing, health care, pensions, freedom from political persecution, etc.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.... Margaret Mead Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

Hunger in Canada Group presentations –When you work with others, you are accountable to them to remain focused and on topic…like these two!topic…like these two! What principles of social justice are being violated by the hunger crisis?
