8. 3. THE PREFERENTIAL OPTION FOR THE POOR – God has a special love for the poor and calls His people to a covenant of love and justice. It is a teaching founded on the life and words of Jesus Christ, who came “to bring glad tidings to the poor…liberty to captives…recovery of sight to the blind’ (Luke 4:18- 19). 9. 4. Stewardship — God calls humans to be caretakers of the earth they inhabit. We are here stewards of the world and the animals. We are not supposed to abuse the land and seas; i.e. acid rain, clear cutting the rainforest, strip mining, oil spills, hunting a species to extinction, etc. The Amazon rainforest is home to thousands of species, some found no other place on earth.
