1 Fetal Pig Dissection

2 Background Information These specimens are NOT raised for dissection purposes. They are salvaged from pregnant sows at slaughter for food. They have been embalmed via the umbilical cord. Arteries and veins also injected with latex (red arteries, blue veins).

3 Objectives: Perform a whole body dissection of a vertebrate like ourselves –Many similarities exist! Muscular, digestive, respiratory, circulatory, reproductive systems Identify the major anatomical features of the pig Understand the relationships between form & function of each organ, each system, and how all systems interconnect – homeostasis!

4 Objectives: Determine the sex of pig using external anatomical landmarks Determine age of fetus via length (fetal pig gestation time = time in the uterus) –Gestational time for pigs ranges between days –Length specifies age 11 mm - 21 days 17 mm - 35 days 2.8 cm - 49 days 4 cm - 56 days 22 cm days 30 cm -- birth
