4  S pecialized structures within a living cell  Parts of the cell that act like specialized “organs”

5  Description: outer layer of the cell  Mainly composed of lipids & proteins  Lipid bi-layer & embedded proteins  Function: regulates what enters and leaves the cell

6  Description: fluid like substance that fills the area of the cell outside the nucleus  Function: site of many cellular activities; surrounds organelles

7  F Function: control all activities of the cell (acts like a brain) CChromatin = coiled up DNA in nucleus NNuclear Envelope = surrounds and protests the nucleus NNucleolus = dark spot in the middle of the nucleus that helps make ribosomes

9  Description: Particles made up of RNA & proteins. Found either:  Free in the cytoplasm  Attached to other organelles.  Function: make proteins

11 3. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)  Nickname: “Roads”  Function: The internal delivery system of the cell (main transport system of the cell).

12  2 Types: 1. Rough ER: Rough appearance because it has ribosomes Function: helps make proteins, that’s why it has ribosomes 2. Smooth ER: NO ribosomes Function: makes fats or lipids

14 Golgi body:  Function: packages, modifies, and transports materials to different location inside/outside of the cell  Appearance : stack of pancakes
