Jonah (Detail) Jonah is seen in deep spiritual confusion; floating, buffeted by currents and breakers, sinking, submerged, part human and part fish. Fetal, hands clasped, and drawn inward, he laments his weakness and loneliness, praying to God for mercy and salvation.
Jonah 1995 Jonah’s deliverance is depicted as an acrobatic spiritual resurgence. Free from encumbrance, the open figure’s leap and reach are juxtaposed with the cruciform fluke of the whale.
The ape, most intelligent of the animals, makes a strong and complex statement to the zebra, who is only capable of seeing the issue in “black and white.” The parrot screeches a radical point of view, while the lizard is only tense, gripping the earth. These temperaments coexist in delicate balance. Peaceable Kingdom Fable
