Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club Opening Day Sunday 12 th of October, 2008 A presentation by the Power Boat Section, but we included a couple of token photos of the Grotties, hanging their washing out. Photos kindly supplied by Steve, Rachel and Gay with their ever present and all seeing cameras. Thanks to Gay for supplying the collage on the front page. Thanks to David and Trevor for providing the photo opportunity for Gay. As R/Com,Terry and his ever faithful crew, Linda were undertaking Official Duties on the day, David and Trevor kindly supplied the entertainment and demonstrated, as a training exercise, how to turn a boat between the finger jetties and berth facing out.
Vigilance, getting decked out.
The Flag factory, Buy your flags and balloons here. All at reduced prices from our Royal Show stock.
Akwa Blue after she had finally berthed against the seawall jetty. Took two attempts and nearly the whole length of jetty to berth. We all do have trouble with those jetties. See later in the show.
Freedom, gained the worst dressed and most untidily dressed boat award. David, after unsuccessfully trying to purchase strings of flags, resorted to Builders safety warning tape, which the wind enjoyed twisting it into a tangled mess
You’d think the Council would get the graders out to smooth things out a bit before the new season
Yeah. It’s not much better out here. The corrugations are really bad and those odd boats in front of us won’t go any faster.
Cruise Captain, Ron trying to get his rebellious followers in line astern.
Green 1, departing to get in to the line up.
Rescue 2, with I think Don and Sandra in charge.
Les, showing off why he took off the first prize for best dressed, Stinkie. Looks like he has lifted the yardstick by miles. Congratulations.
Safari, Ken is showing a little bit of taste, with only a little bit of washing up, and will shortly be joining the “Stinkies”, due to his liking of the outboard motor.
Akwa Blue attempts to ram the Official boat
Vigilance, takes the salute from the Commodore, Ken
One of those odd “Grotty” boats hanging out their washing
Crazy Mama, why didn’t they tell Ted to leave his colourful under dacks on the line at home. Those “Grotties” have no taste, no wonder Captain Grotty “Chook” has sought asylum with the “Stinkies”
Noah James showing the flag.
The following slides demonstrate how to turn a boat within the finger jetties in a moderate breeze and moor up against the leeward jetty. WARNING Do not try this at home or on the water as the exercise was carried out by experts and takes great skill !!!!! (which is not one of the demonstrators attributes) (which is not one of the demonstrators attributes) Photos by the ever present Gay and her all seeing camera
You reckon I can’t turn my boat in between the finger jetties, then I’ll show you how!!!! First you come in gentle like this>
Then you come in at the recommended angle, go to neutral before going to reverse but giving the 20 knot breeze time to pick you up.
Then when the breeze has blown you broadside, put the motor gently into forward idle and potter across to the leeward jetty. Where you will end up with bow pointing out ready to go out again. It’s a little difficult to retrieve the boat onto the trailer like this. You can go out and do it again. Or if you have had enough, you can loose tether the bow to the jetty, put the motor into reverse and point the motor to port and idle the boat until it points to the shore. As the demonstrators are experts they went out and did it all again.
