There are many sub-genre’s amongst the horror genre of film. Some of these include: Giallo, Urbanoia, Body horror, psychological, supernatural, found footage, torture porn, monster movies, slasher/stalker, sci-fi horror, J-horror, zombie.

2. Psychological horror
Relies on a characters fears, guilt's and beliefs, emotional instability and at times the supernatural to build tension and further the plot. Examples of this include: The shining, The Ring and The Excorcist

Compared to other subgenres of horror, psychological horror is subtle. Characters experience less physical harm ... most of the tension and harm is created in the mind. In fact, psychological horror has more in common with the thriller than it does other subgenres of horror.

4. Slasher
This sub genre deals with a lot of violence which usually revolves around a psychotic serial killer stalking and killing numerous amount of victims. The killer usually uses a specific weapon of choice to kill his victim. Slasher films are also built up on a lot of mystery and suspense and may sometimes overlap with crime. Examples include: PSYCHO, The Texas chainsaw massacre and Prom night

5. Common characteristics of Slasher movies include:
The characters are often murdered in harsh/brutal ways using a bladed tool such as a knife, machete, axe, scythe, or chainsaw.
Slasher movies are also built up on a lot of mystery and suspense and may sometimes overlap with crime.
A large number of people are usually murdered in ‘Slasher’ films, usually the murderer’s identity is not revealed until the end of the film to leave the audience guessing.

By the end of the film most characters have been murdered and there is often ‘the final girl’. Sometimes portrayed as the weakest/purest who remains till the end and surives the massacre.
