Marketing Campaign For The Departed Korede Balogun A2 Media
The Departed (brief overview) The Departed is a 2006 American crime drama film remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs. The Departed was directed by Martin Scorsese, written by William Monahan and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, Ray Winstone, Vera Farmiga and Mark Wahlberg. The film won four Academy Awards at the 79th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and a Best Director win for Scorsese.
USP: Unique Selling Point The Big Actors glamorised in the film alone work as a USP for the film as they are recognisable and notable actors This along with the infamous director Martin Scorsese who is recognised not only for this film but for a variety of films in the gangster crime genre directing Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and beyond with the likes of “Alice Doesn’t live here anymore”
Poster Analysis I found that with most posters they featured the main characters in the film and more often than not wrote their names Leonardo Di’Caprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson. The images of these men tended to be scenes grabbed from the actual film and show the men in their role be it scruffy or smart. Another common feature is that they are all men as with many other posters from other films as the gangster crime genre is presumably a macho genre This poster I found strange as it didn’t follow the typical conventions of the other posters by featuring only the main actor(s) but instead chose to feature the more elderly people associated with the film such as Jack Nicholson who is one of the three main actors and unforgettably the experienced director Martin Scorsese. This poster is significant as I assume is more for those with aesthetic appreciation for Mr Scorsese as they recognise him even without having to see his face whom may be of the older generation that would be familiar with his earlier works as a director. Both of these men are wearing the same colour shirt connotating that they are of same significance in age and experience but however Scorsese is in the foreground and has only the side of his face visible although this is risky shows that he may be more established as he doesn’t need his full face to be seen.

At approximately 39seconds into the trailer an Irish melody plays to accompany the images as to allow the audience to establish that the film is in actual fact an Irish Mob Film. The film trailer pretty much briefly dictates the narrative of the film to the audience, although this may be a complete spoiler for some people it only gives a taste of what is going to happen and with the actors the film include the film is confident that it will still get the correct audience regardless. The Director name is written on a blacked out background at the turning point in the trailer so it stands out against the black
Magazine: Total Film November 2006 Here to the left are two drafts in the process of producing a Departed front cover edition of Total Film Both drafts use the same image and do not cover the characters faces too much with text in order for the faces to be clear and visible The faces featured on the cover are the same typical faces often used on the posters of the film this allows it to be acknowledgeable to anybody who recognises the actors and the film “The Departed” This magazine edition has only one sell line which works as a tag line as if for a poster which reads “Mob Rules, Scorsese Comes Home” this tag line is significant as it not only dictates that the film has ‘Mob’ affiliations but notifies the audience of the director who is highly recognised with the gangster crime genre and for him to be directing another one after a long string of non- gangster films means that he has “come home”

The colour scheme of the page is what strikes me automatically as it compliments the film posters theme itself and also the style of which the title is written which becomes the films logo. A trailer from the film is shown in a side box this appeals to the interested audience as it gives them a sneak preview of what the DVD has install. The writing below the trailer is bold writing that transitions in a flashing mode after 3seconds telling the surfer about the awards the film has received. This makes the surfer feel that the film is well established and worthy of purchase. There are various navigations on the page ranging from photo gallery, ’About the DVD’, Cast, etc allowing the surfer different avenues to explore more about the film. The navigation that is most relevant to people to are particularly interested in the film is “Contests and Sweepstakes” this allows people to enter competitions in hope to win The Departed goodies this form of marketing is similarly done in magazines. The focal image on this page is the DVD set. I presume that before the film was available the poster (s) would have been the focal image put placed in the same location. The background is blacked out so that everything that appears on the foreground is prominent and easily visible.
