Non-fiction book report Tips for success
A quick timeline overview Non-fiction book reports are due by 3:00 p.m. on Friday, 11/9. Papers must be turned in both in hard copy AND electronically on turnitin.com.
Strive to have your book completely read by 11/1. Start working on your rough draft during that weekend. We will have a significant chunk of in-class time available during the week of 11/5 to work on your final draft AND the PowerPoint for your book talk. Lots of teacher assistance will be available, so please take advantage of this opportunity.
Your book should be a non-fiction book with a minimum of 200 pages. Check the call number to make sure your book qualifies. Begins with...Sample Call NumberSection of the Library CYPHER Non-fiction (no special code before the number) A FICA FIC LAMOURAdult Fiction AMAM HARRISMystery GRGR Genealogy Room (Headquarters Library only) JRJR 910 WORLD Juvenile Reference (cannot be checked out) J FICJ FIC ROWLINGJuvenile Fiction RR Reference (cannot be checked out) SFSF DELANYScience Fiction / Fantasy YAYA STIEFVATERYoung Adult Fiction
Check the call number on the spine (side) of the book. If it looks like this, then it is a fiction book so it doesn’t qualify for this assignment.
Your reaction paper needs to include a brief 2-3 paragraph summary
Your paper needs to incorporate an outside source. Here are some ideas: On-line book review (i.e. The New York Times) Add some facts that further illustrate a topic within the book. Do some research about the author. Are there any links to something you have studied in school? Remember, you must cite your source.
This is an excellent example of a student incorporating information about the author into the paper.
You need to select a quote (properly cited) from the book along with your reaction (1-2 paragraphs).
The paper must include your recommendation of whether this book is worth reading. Who would enjoy this book? You need a specific detail from the book that backs up your recommendation.
One paragraph with your reaction to things the author didn’t cover, but you wish had been included.
Rea your book soone r rather thar. Seek help and ask questi ons if you are unsur e about a require ment for the assignm ent. Have your rough draft before the week of 11/5. Read your book sooner rather than later. Seek help and ask questions if you are unsure about part of the assignment. Have your rough draft done before 11/5.
