DZAC August 2013
Golden Gate Bridge Safety Built in 1937 US Navy wanted to paint the bridge black with yellow stripes Determined to cheat death by providing every known safety device for workers
Developed Safety Innovations Mining helmets were modified by Edward Bullard local manufacturer-First hard boiled hat worksite Glare free goggles Respirator masks Special diets to fight vertigo Sauerkraut juice “cures “ for hangovers First project to dismiss workers (daredevils)for grandstanding on the cables Safety net – 11 total fatalities – 19 workers fell and were caught by safety nets – Safety record set and lost with one accident broken by section of scaffold
In 50 Years Safety growth has not stopped What innovations will our generation have developed? What safety process changes will LBNL have fostered? What great new idea will Facilities Division have started? What challenges in safety will YOU resolve?
OSHA Heat App When you're working in the heat, safety comes first The OSHA Heat Safety Tool, you have vital safety information available whenever and wherever you need it - right on your mobile phone. The App allows workers and supervisors to calculate the heat index for their worksite, and, based on the heat index, displays a risk level to outdoor workers. Then, with a simple "click," you can get reminders about the protective measures that should be taken at that risk level – Protect workers from heat-related illness-reminders – What to do in an emergency – Adjusting work operations – Monitoring for signs and symptoms of heat-related illness. Stay informed and safe in the heat, check your risk level.
Beach Safety Swimming in the pool is not the same as swimming at a surf beach Smooth water located between breaking waves could signal the presence of a rip current-swim to the side to escape the rip-tide Your body will cool quickly so limit your time in the water and get out if you start to feel cold.
Round Table- ISM Feedback and Continuous Improvement Representative reminders – Talk to your groups about their safety concerns/issues – Bring those concerns/issues forward and present at the DZAC meeting-Opportunity to elevate your concerns – Issues can concern work processes/equipment/hazards/controls
