2 Monday Word: Affluence Affluence (Wealth) America in the 1950s was the only wealthy nation. Literally driven by the automobile, TV and mass marketing Rebirth of the Home owning American Dream Best decade ever (for wealthy white farts… AKA, WASP)

3 Tuesday Word: Baby Boom Returning Veterans and working women settled in 1950s conformity by making the biggest generation in history: The Baby Boomers It redefined the image of the American family and mass consumerism

4 Wednesday: I Like Ike I Like Ike – campaign slogan on TV Dwight Eisenhower (like Calvin Coolidge) led a nation that in a BOOM. Eisenhower (nickname IKE) would win two terms The 1950s are called the Eisenhower Years – pretty good for a guy who never voted or held party affiliations

5 Thursday Word: Conformity If there was one word that summarized America in the 1950sits “conformity” Cooker Cutter houses with Men in suits and women pregnant, taking care of the house Everyone expected to look and act the same But “nonconformity” is brewing – social norms were slowly being challenged in every corner

6 Friday Word: Interstate Act Ike’s greatest long term contribution was the federal building of our Interstate Freeways (like I-80) It replaced old, poor highways with super fast “freeways” (no stops) Biggest building project in world history Built from Defense $$$$

8 Monday March 30 Separate, but Equal In 1898, Plessey v Ferguson caused the US Supreme Court to issue that it was constitutional to segregate races if both races had equal facilities and access to public places. Legal segregation is challenged again in 1954 w/ Brown v. Board of Education, which desegregates public schools
