3 U NIT 1 “- ATION ” 字尾 “- ATION ” 加於動詞之後形成名 詞,表示「進行該動作的狀態或結 果」。 E XAMPLE civilize → civilization 文明 found → foundation 創立 converse → conversation 對話 imagine → imagination 想像 examine → examination 考試 invite → invitation 邀請

4 Examples: 1. They founded a college. The foundation of the university took place over 400 years ago. 2. The teacher examined the students in physics. The teacher gave us an examination in history. Exercise 1. He is a man of __________ (imagine). 2. She received an __________ (invite)to the party. 3. He got into __________ (converse) with his neighbor. 4. Chinese __________ (civilize) is one of the oldest in the world. 5. He __________ (invitation) several of his friends to the show.

5 U NIT 2 “ OVER -” 字首 “ OVER -” 加在名詞、形容詞或 動詞之前,用來表示「過於 …… , 超過 …… 」。 E XAMPLE (1) 加在名詞前形成形容詞 age → overage 超齡的 weight → overweight 過重的 (2) 加在形容詞前 excited → overexcited 過度興奮的 long → overlong 過長的 (3) 加在動詞前 cook → overcook 過度烹煮 use → overuse 過度使用

6 Examples: 1. What’s the age of that old building? Your kids are overage, so they must pay the adult price. 2. What is your weight? He is overweight. Exercise 1. 最近, Susan 一直煩惱過胖的問題。 2. 文章篇幅不要過長。 3. 她特别小心不把肉烹調過火。

7 U NIT 3 “ IL -” 在 “ L ” 開頭的形容詞前加上字首 “ IL -” 可形成否定之意。 E XAMPLE legal → illegal 違法的 literate → illiterate 不識字的 liberal → illiberal 不開明的 logical → illogical 不合邏輯的

8 Examples: 1. He intends to take legal action. All he has done is illegal. 2. It is logical to assume that they will attend. Exercise 1. 從店裡拿走東西卻不付費是犯法的。 2. 律師以合乎邏輯的論點做結論。 3. 從未上過學的人往往目不識丁。 4. 我們的老師很守舊,而你們的卻很開 放。 5. Eddie 的父母對他的教育採取開放的態 度。

9 U NIT 4 “- MENT ” 字尾 “- MENT ” 加在動詞之後構成名詞, 表示「狀態、情況、方法」。 E XAMPLE amaze → amazement 驚訝 punish → punishment 懲罰 appoint → appointment 任命 require → requirement 要求 disappoint → disappointment 失望 treat → treatment 治療

10 Examples: 1. Your letter amazed me. To our amazement, the visiting team won. 2. The teacher punished her students for cheating in the exam. My punishment for littering was several hours of picking up trash. Exercise 1. I have an ______(appoint) with them in the evening 2. The prisoners complained of ill ______(treat) by their guards. 3. He left the station in great ________(disappoint), for she was not on the train. 4. Food is a _________(require) of life. 5. She stared at him in ________(amaze).

11 U NIT 5 “- ABLE ” 將字尾 “- ABLE ” 的形容詞改為 “- ABILITY ” 以構成名詞,表示 「能力,特性」。 E XAMPLE available → availability 可利用 性 probable → probability 可能性 capable → capability 才能 sustainable → sustainability 永續性

12 Examples: 1. He is a probable candidate. The probability of making a mistake increases when you are tired. 2. She is capable of judging works of art. As a scientist, he has the capability of doing important research. Exercise 1. It is highly ________(probability) that it will rain the afternoon. 2. The swimming pool is ________(availability) only in summer. 3. I think Judy is ________(capable) of solving the problem by herself. 4. These issues all affect the _________(sustainability) for growth.

13 U NIT 6 “ - URE ” 字尾 “- URE ” 加在動詞後構成名 詞,用來表示「動作、結果」。 E XAMPLE close → closure 關閉 fail → failure 失敗 depart → departure 啟程 please → pleasure 愉悅 expose → exposure 曝露 press → pressure 壓力

14 Examples: 1. Press this button to start the engine. He works well under pressure. 2. Don’t expose the film to light. The paint came off as the result of exposure to the rain. 3. They departed at noon. The plane’s departure was on schedule. Exercise 1. She ______ (failure) in the exam. 2. Under the ______(press) of the urgent circumstances, he had to resign. 3. He finds great _______(pleasure) in reading. 4. They consider it almost a crime to ______(exposure) children to violence and sex on TV. 5.
