THERE IS A SANCTIFICATION GAP

“an even more profound problem is that most evangelical Christians have an understanding of conversion that presumes they are “good to go”. They have prayed a prayer that “assures” them of a future life, and in the meantime they hear preaching on Sunday that, quite simply, does not either call for or rely on a theology of spiritual maturity. The dominant motif is that salvation can be experienced by believing certain things to be true, praying a simple prayer and then carrying on as best one can till Jesus “returns”…..the goal of the church is to get people “saved” so they can be happy and live productive and civil lives, all with the assurance that in the next life they will be in “heaven”. Gordon T. Smith – Called to be Saints – an invitation to Christian maturity “ Most words spoken in Sunday preaching in evangelical churches do not assume that spiritual maturity is integral to the gospel.” Gordon T. Smith – Called to be Saints – an invitation to Christian maturity

“There is a great market for religious experience in our world, there is little enthusiasm for the patient acquisition of virtue, little inclination to sign up for a long apprenticeship in what earlier generations of Christians called holiness.” Eugene Peterson “ Millions of people in our culture make decisions for Christ, but there is a dreadful attrition rate. Many claim to have been born again, but the evidence for mature Christian discipleship is slim. In our kind of culture anything, even news about God, can be sold if it is packaged freshly; but when it loses its novelty, it goes on the garbage heap. “

Colossians 2:6-7 6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving

Ephesians 4:13-15 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,

Romans 8:29 (NASB) 29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;

Galatians 4:19 (NASB) 19 My children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you— THE GOAL OF ANCHORING IS TO BE CONFORMED TO THE IMAGE OF CHRIST

2 Corinthians 3:18 (NASB) 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

2 Corinthians 5:14 (NLT) 14 Either way, Christ’s love controls us. Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life. THE MOTIVATION FOR ANCHORING IS THE LOVE OF CHRIST

Philippians 2:12-13 (NASB) 12 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; Philippians 3:14 (NASB) 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 2:13 (NASB) 13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. Philippians 4:13 (NLT) 13 For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

“GOD IS NOT OPPOSED TO EFFORT BUT TO EARNING” Dallas Willard – The Great Omission

BY BEING IN UNION WITH CHRIST Key verse: John 15:4-7 (NASB) 4 "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. 5 "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.

BY BEING FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT Ephesians 5:18 (NASB) 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, Galatians 5:18 (NASB) 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. Galatians 5:25 (NASB) 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

BY APPLYING THE MEANS OF GRACE The means of Grace include: Teaching of the Word Baptism The Lord’s Supper Prayer Worship Giving Fellowship Evangelism Personal ministry to individuals

BY PRACTICING THE SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES

1 Timothy 4:7-10 (NLT) 7 Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly. 8 “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.”

DISCIPLINES OF ABSTINENCE solitude, silence, fasting, frugality, secrecy, chastity, sacrifice. DISCIPLINES OF ENGAGEMENT: study, prayer, worship, fellowship, submission, service confession.

“if a leader's going to sustain high levels of passion for decades, you have to have certain disciplines, routines, and practices at the very core of who you are and what you do. Those must be in place if you're going to suit up every day and replenish on a regular basis, to experience the kind of inner circle relationships that hold you accountable and cheer you on. In the end, those practices are what will make the difference” Bill Hybels

BY GOING THROUGH SUFFERING Romans 5:3-5 (NASB) 3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

BY PARTICIPATING IN COMMUNITIES OF GRACE

Deuteronomy 32:11 (NASB) 11 "Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, That hovers over its young, He spread His wings and caught them, He carried them on His pinions. Exodus 19:4 (NASB) 4 'You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings, and brought you to Myself.
