Objectives : To learn expressions of asking for and making suggestions by acting out the dialogues; To improve skills of reading, listening, writing, translation and speaking through the study of the text and the exercises.

Language Points: What if they want someone experienced? What will, would, be the result of if: 万一 … 怎么办？ What if it rains while we are a long way from the shelter? 万一天下雨而我们离躲雨的地方又很远怎么办？ 如果谣言是真的怎么办？ What if the rumour is true?
Language Points: You would not let them down if they gave you a chance. let sb down: disappoint 迈克是这样一个如此出色的孩子，他永不会让 父母失望。 Mike is such an excellent boy that he will never let his parents down. I’ve been badly let down. 我非常失望。 let-down: n. disappointment
Language Points: Then I will also tell them that I can fit the work into my study schedule. Language Points: We don’t want to get so many gatecrashers again. gatecrasher: (American English: party- crasher) a person who goes to a party or other social event without having been invited; an informal colloquial word

Language Points: …and as I was about to write, … be about to do: just be going to do 即将；正要 我正要说的时候，你插嘴了。 As I was about to say, you interrupted me. 他即将动身。 He was about to start.
Language Points: …my mind went blank,… I couldn’t recall things. 脑中一片空白，什么都忘了。 blank: empty, without expression. There was a blank look on his face. 他的脸上毫无表情。 他的前途似很黯淡。 His future looks blank.
Somebody giggled and I stiffened. stiffen: v. make or become stiff 1) vt. 使发僵 The long march stiffened me (up). 2) vi. 变得生硬，发硬，发僵 He stiffened at her rude remarks. Language Points:
stiff: adj. not easily bent or changed in shape 坚硬的；僵直的 My back was stiff after sitting for so many hours. I woke up with a stiff neck. 在走了长路后我感觉肢体发僵。 I felt stiff after a long walk.
Language Points: … the teacher coaxed. coax: get sb to do sth by kindness or patience 哄诱； 劝诱 The mother coaxed her child to take the medicine. 她哄劝她的先生带她去看戏。 She coaxed her husband to take her to the theatre. coaxing: n. give sb a coaxing
Language Points: An impulse to write would flash through me,… v. come suddenly (into the mind) 闪现；掠过（心头） 这念头掠过他的心头。 The idea flashed into/through his mind. 快车一闪而过。 The express train flashed past. flash: n. a ~ of lightening 闪电 a ~ of inspiration 灵感的闪现
Language Points: The children began to titter and I flushed hotly. vi.( 脸 ) 变红 当那男人跟她讲话时，那女孩的脸红了。 The girl flushed when the man spoke to her. 2) vt. 使变红 羞愧使他的脸红了。 Shame flushed his face. Anger flushed his cheeks. 她因运动而脸红。 She was flushed with exercise.
Language Points: She placed her hand tenderly upon my shoulder. place: put sth in a certain place 他把书放到了桌子上。 He placed the book on the desk. 把它们按顺序放好。 Place them in the right order. He placed one sheet carefully on top of the other.
Language Points: …trying desperately to redeem my paralysing shyness. redeem: vt. 1) compensate 弥补；补偿 She worked weekends to redeem the lost time. 2) 赎回 I’m going to redeem my gold watch.
paralyse/ paralyze (AmE): vt. 1) 使瘫痪；使麻痹 His left arm was paralyzed. 2) 使陷于瘫痪状态，使不起作用 The electricity failure paralyzed the train service. Fear paralyzed his mind. Language Points:
I tried frantically to collect my senses but … I tried wildly to keep calm, but… sense: 1) 官能；感觉；知觉 have a keen sense of hearing 听觉敏锐 sixth sense 2 ） (pl) normal state of mind I do not believe that Robert was in his (right) senses when he made that will. 头脑正常 He must be out of his senses to act in that way. 神智不清，头脑不正常

Language Points: I realised how utterly I was failing… utterly: adv. completely 她对他憎恨之极。 She hates him utterly. utter: adj. complete; total 我根本不认识她。 She is an utter stranger to me.
Language Points: The room burst into a loud and prolonged laugh … burst into: send out suddenly 突然大哭 / 大笑 burst into tears/laughter burst out crying/laughing 她一看到我就突然大哭起来。 As soon as she saw me, she burst into tears. prolonged: adj. continuing for a long time 在长时间的质询之后 after prolonged questioning prolong: vt. make longer We had to prolong our stay for another week.
Language Points: …and no doubt I could read better than any of them,… no doubt: 肯定地，想必 No doubt I learned a lot from that lecture. No doubt it is very ridiculous.
Language Points: …I could talk fluently and expressively when I was sure of myself. be/feel sure of oneself: have self-confidence She seems very sure of herself, but she isn’t really. be/feel sure about sth: have no doubts about be sure of sth/that Can we be sure of his honesty? Can we be sure that he is honest? be sure to do sth: 务必；一定要 make sure that…/of sth: 确信 He looked behind to make sure he was not being followed.
Language Points: Read more stand up for: 1 ）替 … 说话，为 … 辩护，支持，坚持 He stood up for his brother. He was a person who would stand up for what he thought right, no matter what the cost to himself. 2) 维护自己的（权益） We’re determined to stand up for our rights.
