Enhanced cooperation Ramin expert meeting KL, 16-19 May 50 participants (range states, importers, trade, NGOs, IGOs) Report to ITTC XLI, published thereafter Mahogany Working Group meeting Lima, 28-30 June, ITTO/CITES/UNEP led 40 participants (range states, importers, trade, NGOs, IGOs) Report to ITTC XLI Provide for enhanced cooperation on CITES matters related to tropical timber among governments (including CITES authorities), the private sector, and civil society
Improve capacity (1) Improve capacity of Members to implement CITES listings of timber species Implementation approach under development Major activities foreseen: Recruitment of regional/overall coordinators Development of national/regional plans and projects Design of resource inventories Develop/implement improved management plans Undertake case studies on and develop guidelines for making NDFs
Improve capacity (2) Major activities foreseen (cont’d) Establish (or support existing) national/regional fora dealing with management of endangered timber species Develop cost-effective regulatory systems for endangered timber species (tracking, market studies, incentives) CITES training workshops Input from members welcome
Improve capacity (3) Status of funding US$250,000 already pledged through ITTO US$2.3 million grant proposal to be submitted to EU by ITTO/CITES in July
