Journal 1/27/15 Momentum is the basic idea behind weapons like guns. What kind of defensive thing might we create using momentum or collisions? Objective Tonight’s Homework To practice with concepts on momentum and collisions p 281: WDYL 2, 3, 4

? 4) Does the bowling ball from #1 have more momentum or less momentum than an 800 kg truck rolling at 0.2 m/s? Show the momentum for both.

? 1) A 4,000 kg car is at rest at a traffic light (the car on the right). Along comes another car (the left one) with a mass of 1,000 kg Going at 25 m/s. The two hit and the cars stick after the collision. What speed do they move forward with? 2) A bullet moving at 300 m/s hits and embeds itself into a big wooden block with a mass of 2 kg. The bullet has a mass of 0.02 kg. How fast will the block move backward? 3) These problems can be kind of tricky. Come up with a set of steps or rules you can use to solve problems like these. A cannon of mass 1,300 kg fires a cannon ball. The cannon ball has a mass of 72 kg and is fired toward the right with a velocity 55 m/s. With what speed does the cannon kick back to the left?

Exit Question A light object collides with another light object and they stick together in an inelastic collision. What can we say about what happens after the collision? The combined object will speed up The combined object will slow down The objects will stop moving Not enough information None of the above
