2 GBIF Usage of Taxonomic Names Intended User Base Completely open-ended Taxonomists and other scientific researchers Governments and policy makers General public Users and applications Intended Functionality Provide access to authoritative name data for all taxonomic groups, including taxonomic hierarchies and synonymy Index networked biodiversity data using taxonomic names Use both known synonymy and taxonomic hierarchies to improve results of user requests for all classes of biodiversity data Support access via vernacular names Also provide access to lists of taxonomic names other than taxonomic authority files (regional checklists, red lists, etc.) – implies need for name list metadata Handle names correctly for all codes Multiple user interfaces
