6 A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk Policy Development: Funder vs. University Needs Researchers must comply with the policy Requirement of EPSRC expectation 3 Policies are enforceable rules Non-compliance considered under disciplinary procedures Researchers can’t comply if infrastructure’s not yet ready Scope of the policy must be clear Focus on EPSRC funded researchers but applicable to entire university research community –Academics, students & professional support services Exclude data generated for use entirely outside the university –Contract research –Students embedded in industry

7 A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk Policy Development: Funder vs. University Needs  Policy development involved considerable stakeholder consultation  Consultation process means stakeholders feel engaged & will support implementation Fulfil EPSRC expectations Publication of metadata within 12 months of data creation – include how data can be accessed Comply with current collaboration agreements Don’t currently address publication of research data Often preclude free and open sharing of data Inform future collaboration agreements Reassure potential partners about confidentiality of commercially sensitive data Ensure publication protocols are established that include data publication
