3 PROBLEM MOTIVATION Annually - millions of tons of trash, billions of dollars

4 PROBLEM MOTIVATION ● Trash on UMD campus ● Beneficial if students and campus visitors would dispose of trash and recyclables correctly

5 PROBLEM DESCRIPTION ● Littering, items in wrong bins, cigarettes ● Difficulty finding open trash bins

11 FORMATIVE RESEARCH RESULTS ● Interview ○ Most people have seen others litter ○ Difficult to find available trash cans ● Observation ○ Litter in areas close to trash cans ○ Cigarette waste is a problem
