2 LONDON, THE CRYSTAL PALACE THE FIRST FAIR, THE GREAT EXHIBITION OF THE WORKS OF INDUSTRY OF ALL CONTINENTS, WAS HELD IN 1851 IN HYDE PARK, LONDON. THE FAIR WITH THE LOFTY NAME FUNCTIONED AS A PLATFORM FOR NATIONS TO SHOWCASE THEIR INNOVATIONS IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY.

3 PHILADELPHIA, HORSEPOWER THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE UNITED STATES, THE AMERICAN CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION WAS THE FIRST OFFICIAL WORLD'S FAIR HELD IN THE U.S., A 1,500-HORSEPOWER CORLISS STEAM ENGINE, WHICH POWERED ALL THE EXHIBITS AT THE FAIR.

4 PARIS, LA TOUR EIFFEL PARIS' EXPOSITION UNIVERSAL IN 1889 COMMEMORATED A SIGNIFICANT MOMENT IN THE HOST NATION'S HISTORY: AN EVENT THAT HAS TRADITIONALLY REPRESENTED THE START OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION. THE MOST REVOLUTIONARY EXHIBIT WAS A LITTLE PROJECT BY ENGINEER GUSTAVE EIFFEL. AT 324 M (1,063 FT.), LA TOUR EIFFEL (THE EIFFEL TOWER) WAS THE TALLEST STANDING STRUCTURE IN THE WORLD UPON ITS COMPLETION.

5 CHICAGO, FERRIS' WHEEL THE WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION WAS HELD IN CHICAGO TO MARK THE 400TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS ARRIVAL IN THE NEW WORLD. THE EXPO WAS NOTABLE FOR BEING THE DEBUT OF THE FERRIS WHEEL. DESIGNED & BUILT BY GEORGE WASHINGTON GALE FERRIS JR., THE WHEEL MEASURED 804 M (264 FEET) TALL & HELD 36 CARS THAT ACCOMMODATED UP TO 60 PEOPLE EACH.

6 SAN FRANCISCO, NIGHT BRIGHT IN 1915 WAS HERALDED AS A SIGN THAT SAN FRANCISCO, THE CENTERPIECE OF FAIR WAS THE TOWER OF JEWELS, A 433-FT.-TALL (132 M) STRUCTURE ADORNED WITH MORE THAN 100,000 AUSTRIAN GLASS FRAGMENTS CALLED NOVA GEMS.

7 NEW YORK CITY, THE WORLD OF TOMORROW NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR, HELD AT FLUSHING MEADOWS–CORONA PARK IN NEW YORK CITY, THE BIG APPLE ADOPTED THE SLOGAN "DAWN OF A NEW DAY" FOR ITS FIRST FAIR, ITS PURPOSE BEING TO SHOW VISITORS "THE WORLD OF TOMORROW." THE TRYLON CONSISTED OF A 700-FT. (210 M) SPIRE, WHILE THE PERISPHERE, PICTURED ABOVE, WAS A GIANT SPHERE 180 FT. (55 M) IN DIAMETER.

8 MONTREAL, NATIONAL GEOMETRY THE 1967 INTERNATIONAL & UNIVERSAL EXPOSITION IN MONTREAL, AMERICAN ARCHITECT & FUTURIST BUCKMINSTER FULLER WAS CHOSEN TO DESIGN THE U.S. PAVILION. WHAT EMERGED WAS A 200-FT. (70 M) RENDITION OF FULLER'S ICONIC GEODESIC DOME.

9 OSAKA, AN EASTERLY AFFAIR IN 1970 JAPAN BROKE THIS TREND BY HOSTING ASIA'S FIRST WORLD'S FAIR IN OSAKA. THE EXPO WAS NOTABLE FOR SCREENING THE FIRST-EVER IMAX FILM AS WELL AS DEMONSTRATING EARLY MOBILE-PHONE & MAGNETIC-LEVITATION TECHNOLOGY.

10 SHANGHAI, EXPO 2010 EXPO 2010 SHANGHAI WILL BE THE FIRST WORLD'S FAIR HOSTED IN CHINA. THE EXPO IS EXPECTED TO DRAW ABOUT 70 MILLION VISITORS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. THE SHANGHAI WORLD EXPO WILL BE USED TO MARK THE CITY'S RETURN TO THE FOREFRONT OF GLOBAL COMMERCE & CULTURE.
